Topic: Behrouz Vossoughi

  Film & Video

Behrouz Vossoughi was Iran’s most acclaimed and recognizable actor in the 1960s and ‘70s, but his association with the royal family and Iran’s old regime forced him out of the country at the onslaught of the revolution.
Venus Ameh’lli, who is serving as a liaison between Vossoughi and the festival, prepared a brief tape for the class presenting clips from some of Behrouz’s films.
Behrouz asked that the film be shown before he came into the classroom so that the students could “make up their own minds” about him.

Recently retired menial laborer Babak (Behrouz Vossoughi) is having difficulty collecting his pension due to the unavailability of identifying documents from the native Afghanistan he fled 20 years earlier.
He does this gently at first, preparing special Afghan meals Babek hasn't eaten in years, and later harshly, forcing him to relive the indirect betrayal that left him with the blood of loved ones on his hands.
Considerable attention has gone into the soundtrack, which combines the music of contemporary Afghan composer Zaher Howaida (who appears briefly in a tavern scene) with traditional folkloric songs, and incorporates a disquieting mix of noise such as wind, whispering and howling dogs.

One lesser-known but highly deserving honoree at the festival is the Iranian actor Behrouz Vossoughi, recipient of this year's tribute to what the SFIFF calls "The Unvanquished" -- film figures whose careers have suffered for political reasons.
Vossoughi was a major star in Iran in the decade before the Revolution of 1979; he played a noble swordsman in the adventure film Dash Akol (1971) and an unlucky workingman in the social protest film Tangsir (1975).
Since the Revolution, Vossoughi has lived in exile, continuing his career in small film and TV parts.

The Cinema Rex Fire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The timing and the location of the incident (an impoverished district of Abadan) did not coincide with preceding patterns of protestation, which raised the level of suspicion.
It was also believed that the shah specifically targeted Cinema Rex for the sole purpose of killing political dissidents who had gathered to watch a controversial anti-government film called Gavaznha (The Deer) starring well-known actor Behrouz Vossoughi.
Another rumour suggested that the shah intentionally blamed the incident on Islamist militants in an attempt to discredit and potentially dislodge them from their growing influence within the undefined hierarchy of the revolutionary forces.
