John Malkovich - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
John Gavin Malkovich (born December 9, 1953) is an Academy Award-nominated American actor, producer and director.
John Malkovich was born in Christopher, Illinois, to father Daniel Malkovich, a state conservation director and publisher of a conservation magazine, and Joe Anne, who owned the Benton Evening News in Benton, Illinois, as well as the Outdoor Illinois.
Malkovich also plays the main villain Cyrus "The Virus" Grissom in the movie "Con Air." Though he played the title role in the Charlie Kaufman-penned Being John Malkovich, he is playing a slight variation of himself, as indicated by the character's middle name of "Horatio".

 Phil Haverstick's Movie Reviews
"Being John Malkovitch" is a strange (even crazy) film, based on a completely absurd and fantastic idea, that behind a file cabinet in a surreal office on the 71/2 floor of a New York office building there exists a passageway into actor John Malkovitch's mind.
John Cusack plays Craig, a long-haired struggling puppeteer (is "puppeteer" actually a viable profession these days in the art world?) who is forced to "sell out" and take a job as a file clerk to survive financially.
Then, she seduces him (this sex scene, by the way, is one of the few "justifiable" sex scenes I've seen in years-- justifiable in the sense that it's artistically relevant andnot there simply to pander to the audience; and as a result, it's erotic).

John Malkovich was presented with an interesting opportunity in playing himself, and he seems to have seized the opportunity with relish.
He is most definitely not being himself in front of the camera, but instead creates this wonderful character of John Malkovich the vessel.

Comedy, despair, isolation Being John Malkovich, directed by Spike Jonze, written by Charlie Kaufman   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
On the surface, it appears to be a fantasy/screwball comedy with an inventive hook: a secret passageway in a midtown office leads directly to the inside of actor John Malkovich's psyche.
Most of the critical attention surrounding the film has focused on the imaginative quality of the screenplay (for which co-screenwriter Charlie Kaufman must be given large credit), while ignoring the dark and disturbing tone that prevails throughout.
Unfortunately, the obligatory explanation for the portal is severely anti-climactic, but the film's final moments are incredibly moving, with Craig wholly addicted to the erasure of his identity, as it is his only means of being close to the affection that he so deeply craves.

John Cusack, best known for his bizarre film noir turn in Being John Malkovitch, sat down to talk with The Satyr during a day of touring to promote his then current movie, High Fidelity.
So the dynamic that most people have is that a lot of times most people know what they’re really feeling, or know what they want to do, but they just get paralyzed and they keep doing the wrong things anyway.
But, Being John Malkovich was very successful too, so maybe the climate is changing for the better.I thought your two sidekicks in the film, Todd Louiso and Jack Black, were perfectly cast in their roles.

At the end of my review of Spike Jonze’s imaginative first film “Being John Malkovitch”, I wondered how Jonze could possibly follow up on such an impressive first “act”.
That is, he’s come in with a film that is bitingly funny, psychologically astute, and (most of all) fantastic beyond belief.
And the film is funny throughout, especially in the way it portrays Kaufman’s case of writer's block as hell on Earth.

"Being John Malkovich" is the first produced screenplay by Charlie Kaufman, and it bears the mark of demented genius.
By the end, "Being John Malkovich" becomes so unhinged that its story loses all shape and direction -- but the tremendous craft and warped sensibility at work are so pleasurable that this really doesn't matter as much as it should.
One of the best things about "Being John Malkovich," to my mind, is that Jonze and Kaufman don't waste time making fun of these ordinary, unhappy people, who would certainly make easy targets.

While too many movies suffer the fate of creative bankruptcy, Being John Malkovich is a refreshing study in contrast, so bracingly original that you'll want to send director Spike Jonze and screenwriter Charlie Kaufman a thank-you note for restoring your faith in the enchantment of film.
An out-of-work puppeteer (John Cusack), his pet-loving girlfriend (Cameron Diaz), and a cynical office worker (Catherine Keener) take turns entering the head of the actor John Malkovich, where they remain for fifteen minutes at a time, experiencing everything he does, before being deposited with a whoosh beside the New Jersey Turnpike.
Casting is pure gold with a bedraggled-looking John Cusack appropriately awestruck as Craig, a cast-against-type Cameron Diaz energized by her curiosity as Lotte and Catherine Keener sharply feline as Maxine.

Waxman, 41, talks to The Journal about filmmaking, about being an observer to “this foreign country” of Hollywood and about the biggest taboo subject of all: Being Jewish in Hollywood.
SW: There’s a reluctance to highlight the fact that there are a large number of Jews in Hollywood, because there’s a concern that people will take that to mean there’s some kind of Jewish influence or cabal, and people don’t want to feed into false negative stereotypes.
