Being honest and direct (sometimes construed as mean) has actually been used by others in my comapany against me and has caused me to have lower performance ratings than my peers.
Being nice (which is my natural self) has paid off sometimes, but unless you're willing to be completely trampled, you will eventually have to enter the battle sometime--at which point you will promptly get your head chopped off.
Being honestly critical is good, because the point of the exercise is for the person whose work your criticising deserves a chance to learn.
