Beinn Eighe is one of the mountains of the Torridon area of the Highlands of Scotland.
One of the most famous features of Beinn Eighe is the corrie of Coire Mhic Fearchair, often simply known as the “triple buttress corrie” in view of the three large rock features the dominate the view.

The summit itself is guarded by a couple of sharp ridges, that must be traversed to reach it.
Finally, to the west of this lot, the sandstone ridge of Beinn Damph is a superb peak to introduce you to the splendours of the region.
The high mountains of the region are composed of layers of a red sandtone (Torridonian) which is protected by a cap of quartzite - its quite obvious in the view of the slopes of Liathach below.

The name Beinn Eighe is variously interpreted as the 'ice mountain', 'comb mountain', or 'file mountain'.
From this first summit the path proceeds west along the ridge around to the summit of Ruadh-stac Mor at a height of 3,309 ft. From there a descent is made by returning along the path a short way and descending a short steep scree into the Coire Mhic Fhearchair.
My collection of scanned photographs does not yet include one specifically of Beinn Eighe but it can be seen, largely hidden, in relation to the other Torridon mountains in the picture of Liathach.

Beinn Eighe is largest mountain in the Torridon range - a complete mountain range in itself.
We did not leave the mist until we were well down and turned the watershed between Beinn Eighe and Liathach.
The path rises to the height of the pass at just under 400m and divides, the right hand branch turning the west and north flank of Sail Mhor to gain the lip of the corrie.

Such is the importance to our national heritage that in 1951 Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve, the first in Britain was formed.
Liathach's, presence is awesome for it overwhelms the senses as it suddenly appears to fill the skyline ahead, climbing vertically from the floor of the glen and boasts three Munro's.
Beinn Eighe is of sandstone bedrock capped by a mass of quartzite which has weathered to create the characteristic white screes; this loose covering gives the impression that the mountain is snowcapped.

They are formed of ancient sandstone, three hundred million years old, laid down in characteristic rough bedding planes that gives these hills and their satellites such an awesome appearance.
Beinn Eighe and Liathach are in turn capped with a layer of quartzite that serves to give them an other-worldly appearance, strikingly jagged and multicoloured hills that, in certain lights, actually appear to glow.
Liathach and Beinn Eighe are unusually steep and rough and are difficult territory for the hillwalker, and Liathach's summit ridge is so rent with jagged and exposed pinnacles that it is reckoned to be the most difficult terrain on the UK mainland.

Beinn Alligin is the western of the three great mountain masses crowding in on the northern side of Upper Loch Torridon and Glen Torridon, the other two being Liathach and Beinn Eighe.
Those whose only interest is in bagging Munros will have found Beinn Alligin twice as interesting since the publication of the revised list in 1997, in which Beinn Alligin rightly had Tom na Gruagaich added to Sgurr Mhor to make this a two-Munro round.
Beinn Alligin has a good parking area conveniently located at the foot of the two alternative means of ascent.

Beinn Eighe is a complex mountain with many peaks and corries, the most beautiful of which is Coire Mhic Fhearchair with its lochan and the towering triple buttress at its head.
A moderate route, but the traverse of Beinn Eighe including the triple buttress (highly recommended) is more difficult as it requires scrambling.
Unless a new non-scrambling route can be found ordinary pedestrians may someday be unable to climb Beinn Eighe from the coire.

We all retired after a short while with Scott and I deciding that the morning's intended hills would be confined to Beinn Eighe with Sunday perhaps reserved for Beinn Alligin.
