  Bet She'an - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bet She'an's location has often been strategically significant, as it sits at the junction of the Jordan River Valley and the Jezreel Valley, essentially controlling access from the interior to the coast, as well as from Jerusalem to the Galilee.
Bet She'an is first listed among Thutmose III's conquests in the fourteenth century BCE, and the remains of an Egyptian administrative center from the XVIII and XIX dynasties have been excavated.
During the 6th century Byzantine period, Bet She'an housed a Christian monastery named the Monastery of Lady Mary which has a Zodiac mosaic that is still preserved today, and in 409 it became the capital of the northern district, Palaestina Secunda.

The beautiful city of Beth Shean was located in the lush Jordan Valley not far from Mount Gilboa and close to the Jordan River, in the portion of land belonging to the tribe of Menasheh (Josh.
During the Jewish revolt of 68 CE against Roman dominion, which led to the destruction of the Bais HaMikdash, Beth Shean was captured by the Romans and the Jewish inhabitants were massacred.
Beth Shean was an active agricultural center of Eretz Yisrael, but the culture and flavor of the city was definitely Roman.

In Judges 1:27 Beit Shean is mentioned as belonging to the conquered area of the Israelite tribe of Manasseh, but in reality the Israelites were not advanced enough yet to be able to conquer a fortified stone city.
In the famous battle of the Israelites against the Philistines on Mount Gilboa, the dead bodies of King Saul and his son Jonathan were hung on the walls of Beit Shean (1 Samuel 31:10).
Beit Shean park seems a bit overwhelming at first glance and in the summer it can be very hot as the city lies in the low-lying valley like a frying pan.
