Belcanto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bel canto singing is characterized by a focus on perfect evenness throughout the voice, skillful legato, a light upper register, tremendous agility and flexibility, and a certain lyric, "sweet" timbre.
Emphasizing technique over volume, bel canto style has famously been linked to an exercise said to demonstrate its epitome, where a singer holds a lit candle to her mouth and sings without causing the flame to flicker.
While the bel canto period is typically dated to the early 19th century, the term itself did not come to be commonly used in its current sense until the middle of the 19th century.

Bel canto technique emerged in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but its roots lie all the way through the Middle Ages.
Bel canto means, most literally, "beautiful singing." It is a term used to describe all Italian singing, but in particular the light, bright quality that Italian opera singers use to charm audiences.
Bel canto was initially used by men, and, at its earliest, by male religious singers.

As the days become weeks and the weeks flow into months, an uneasy rhythm marks the time spent in captivity as the world is reduced to the four walls of the Vice President's mansion.
The beauty of the music is always present -- "soon enough the days were divided into three states: the anticipation of her signing, the pleasure of her signing, and the reflection of her singing" -- in stark contrast to the harsh reality of the situation.
Mesmerizing with its lyrical prose, Bel Canto builds to an unexpected and poignant crescendo that resonates with emotion.

classical music - andante - a new first lady of bel canto
Bel canto tends to be career-making repertoire for young singers — the sheer athleticism is so thrilling that it can't help attracting attention.
Maria Callas and Beverly Sills both stuck with bel canto, though Sills admitted that her choice of roles took a decade off her career and some opera pundits believe Callas would have added years to hers had she traded Bellini for something like Schubert.
One of the first things we're all taught about bel canto is that the score is a blueprint rather than the totality — the composer supplies the notes, with the performer expected to provide the emotional life — but that's only the beginning of the creative challenges involved in this repertory.
