Bel and the Dragon is the third of the three Apocryphal additions to Daniel, The SONG OF THE THREE CHILDREN and SUSANNA (which see) being the other two.
In the Syriac Peshitta (W) the story of Bel and the Dragon is preceded by "Bel the idol," and that of the Dragon by "Then follows the Dragon." Bel and the Dragon is the title in all Protestant versions of the Apocrypha, which rigidly keep the latter separate from the books of the Hebrew canon.
The stories of Bel and of the Dragon have a separate origin and existed apart: they are brought together because they both agree in holding up idolatry to ridicule and in encouraging Jewish believers to be true to their religion.

Bel and the Dragon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is believed by some scholars to have been written in the late 2nd century BC and accounted apocryphal in Protestant Bibles.
The narrative of Bel (14:1–22) is a folk tale ridiculing worship.
In the brief companion narrative of the Dragon (14:23–30), "there was a great dragon, which the Babylonians revered." In this case the supposed god is no idol, but not all that eats is divine: Daniel slew the dragon by making cakes of pitch, fat and hair.

NET Bible® - Bel and the Dragon 1 Notes
Presented with an opportunity to demonstrate the folly of worshipping Bel, Daniel exposes a previously undetected scheme whereby the priests of Bel had given the false impression that their idol was actually alive.
As a result of this exposé the king puts the priests of Bel to death, and Daniel destroys both the idol and its temple.
In the former instance it is Bel’s inability to eat that demonstrates that he is not really a god, and in the second instance it is the dragon’s ability to eat that is used to demonstrate that he is not really a god.
