A TRIBUTE TO BELA H BANATHY
No one disagreed with Bela’s view of the sorry state of the world and the disappointing failure of systems thinking to contribute to reducing the major problems of inequity, inequality, failure of social systems, despoliation of the environment, crime, drugs, which he reviewed in his introduction to the meeting.
Bela argued that the issues facing the future of mankind and society were so enormous, that the traditional problem-solving approach of differentiating between a system and its environment, and then agents acting to produce a feasible and desirable change in some aspect of the system concerned, could not work.
Bela Banathy has been the sustaining influence of my own continuing individual emergence over the last 15 years, not only in terms of the focus of the 20 papers/articles I have produced but in terms of my attitude to the world and the desperate need to take charge of the future.

Systems thinking - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Evolutionary systems - the development of Evolutionary Systems Design by Bela H. Banathy integrates critical systems inquiry and soft systems methodologies to create a meta-methodology applicable to the design of complex social systems.
These systems, similar to dynamic systems are understood as open, complex systems, but further accounts for their potential capacity to evolve over time.
Banathy uniquely integrated the multidisciplinary perspectives of systems research (including chaos, complexity, cybernetics), cultural anthropology, evolutionary theory, and others.

Bela Banathy will go down in history as one of the great systemists along with von Bertalanffy and Rapaport.
Bela showed us how this could be done with his life, and set an example that anyone could aspire to.
This is what Bela was talking about, not what he has to say, per se, rather what he inspires others to say.

 NCC DEFINITIONS
(Banathy, 1992) Problems came to be seen as something which could be isolated as variables in linear problem/ solution and cause and effect terms where a "quick technical fix" was possible.
There is a preference for synthesis and divergent focus as opposed to the analytical and reductionist thinking of the old paradigm (Banathy, 1993) Within individuals there is a balance between the rational knowledge and cerebral thinking abilities and intuitive and spiritual abilities.
This balancing of the human psyche or integration is the essence of the new paradigm as described by Wilbur and Gebser who saw the link with the evolution of human consciousness and that of cultural evolution.

Guided Evolution of Society : A Systems View (Contemporary Systems Thinking) by Bela H. Banathy [ISBN: 0306463822] - ...
Banathy has written what is probably the only work in existence on an evolutionary epistemology.
The unique and intriguing aspect of Dr. Banathy's work in general, and this work in particular, is the emphasis on the process of social systems design.
In this sense, the work does not try to advocate any other values than that people must take charge of their future and that everyone should be involved in the design of the social systems in which they will inhabit.

The three imperatives of the design of educational systems: Transcend-envision-transform
Banathy also believes that for the design of a new system, the creation of a learning society is necessary.
Another good example of the influence of Banathy’s work on Carr-Chellman’s more mainstream social systems literature is her collaboration with Reigeluth (2001) in which ESD is presented in the context of instructional design and technology.
The influence of Banathy on Carr-Chellman’s work has been significant in that most of her work cites his, and her ideas are formed within the crucible of ideas that was built by Banathy.

Bela H. Banathy says simply: "Conscious evolution enables us to use the creative power of our minds to guide our systems and our society toward the fulfillment of their potential" (Banathy, 1996).
We do what Bela H. Banathy calls for, “transcend and create” through the visioning of the ideal state and then creating design spaces to work toward that state, realizing new potential by building upon unfolded potential.
Gradually, I believe they will replicate, just as Bela H. Banathy envisions, a growing network of agoras of all kinds, until at some point, in the not too distant future, they will attract millions who are self-ejecting from dysfunctional jobs and activities that do not nourish the quality and potential of life on Earth.

Banathy observes, infra note 17, at 149, that this system represents the third generation of "Interactive Management" (IM), which was developed and applied in a large number of settings under the leadership of Christakis.
