  Honor the fallen: Army Sgt. Gregory A. Belanger
Gregory Belanger, 24, of Narragansett, R.I., was with the 325th Military Intelligence Battalion, attached to the 94th Regional Readiness Command, when the convoy was attacked Aug. 27.
Belanger is the first soldier from Rhode Island to die in Iraq since the start of U.S.-led military operations there, according to the Pentagon.
Belanger graduated from Johnson and Wales University in 2001 with a degree in culinary arts before entering the Army as a cook.

Belanger, Mark (8 June 1944-6 Oct. 1998), baseball player and union leader, was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, the son of Ed Belanger, a factory worker and technician, and Maria Bianchi Belanger.
Belanger's family also contributed to the team's success; when the Orioles switched from organ music to recorded music in 1975, his wife's suggestion that John Denver's song "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" be played during home games was an immediate success among fans.
Belanger's work on behalf of players was often performed out of the public eye but had a lasting impact on major league baseball and, by extension, all professional sports in North America.

After Belanger, who was known as "Bam-Bam," scored 26 goals and racked up 274 penalty minutes in the 1975-76 season with the Sherbrooke Beavers and represented his country in the "unofficial" World Junior Hockey championships, the Toronto Maple Leafs made him their second choice in the Amateur Draft.
Belanger's first professional season was spent with the Dallas Black Hawks of the Central Professional Hockey League, and he acquitted himself well; scoring 16 goals and 26 points in 30 games.
