elavezhskaya Pushcha is the oldest national Park of Europe situated in Western part of Belarus within Hrodna and Brest provinces (70 km away from Brest and 30 km away from Kamenets) along the state border with Poland and partially on the territory of Poland.
Belavezhskaya Pushcha is the only forest tract in Europe remaining actually intact.
Early in the 19th century Belavezhskaya Pushcha was the only point on the map of Europe where bisons continued to live as on the rest of the territory of Europe they were actually exterminated.

The conditions similar to protected ones on the territory of the pushcha were established at the beginning of the 15th century.
The preservation of the pushcha was promoted by the fact that it was inhabited by aurochses, the extinction of which and the desire to preserve this species in Europe made first Lithuanian princes, then Polish kings and later on Russian tsars lake care of the protection of this forest ardently.
The National Park Belavezhskaya Pushcha is a large-scale natural scientific laboratory which attracts scientists from all over the world to itself.

The Narev river springs from beyond the borders of the pushcha, crosses the Dikoye marsh, then the northern part of the pushcha from east to west and has swamped narrow flood-lands.

Shushkevich, along with Boris Yeltsin of Russia and Leonid Kravchuk of Ukraine met on December 8, 1991 in Belavezhskaya Pushcha to formally declare the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the formation of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
Since 1994, the country has been led by Alexander Lukashenko, who has been cited by Human Rights Watch for various violations of human rights and is generally regarded as a dictator by Western standards.

Located part in Belarus and part in Poland Belavezhskaya Puscha is the Europe's last surviving primeval forest.
The harsh realities of a transition from socialist to capitalist economies are endangering Belavezha forest today on both Belarusian and Polish sides as it is being used for hunting and forestry.

In late 1993, Alexander Lukashenko, the then chairman of the anti-corruption committee of the Belarusian parliament, accused 70 senior government officials, including Stanislav Shushkevich, the then speaker of the parliament and the acting president, of corruption including stealing state funds for personal purposes.
