Belconnen is situated to the north-west of Canberra's city centre, and surrounds Lake Ginninderra (artificial) on Ginninderra Creek that runs north-west towards the Molonglo River and then into the Murrumbidgee River.'
The Belconnen Town Centre was developed on the shore of Lake Ginninderra in the late 1970s.
Government offices headquartered in Belconnen include the Australian Taxation Office, the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, the Australian Communication and Media Authority, the Australian Broadcasting Authority and the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Normality was restored in 1980 as the side plummeted to second last, and thereafter there was very little for Belconnen supporters to celebrate prior to the merger with West Canberra in 1991 (see footnote 2).
In 1987, West Canberra merged with Belconnen, but at season's end the partnership was dissolved, and the Magpies found a new temporary home in the Monaro Australian Football League.
Belconnen and West Canberra actually first underwent a tentative merger in 1987, but this was dissolved after just a year.

The history of the Belconnen Magpies Football Club is one that has travelled along many different paths, at times under the one banner, and at other times simultaneously under separate banners.
The different design was to reflect the move to the Belconnen district, a new area, new clubhouse and new future.
Belconnen reverted back to it's navy blue and white colours in 1988 when the amalgamation dissolved and continued to sport these colours until 1990.

At the beginning of the 1975 season the Association changed its name to the Group 8/19 Rugby League Referees Association and for quite a few years had the unique experience of carrying two votes to the Country Rugby League Referees Association, since we were servicing two fully-fledged CRL Group competitions.
The experiment was not a success, and rugby league took a nose dive in popularity in the area from which it did not recover until the mid 1960s.

Under the Government's proposal announced yesterday, Ginninderra District High will close at the end of this year and its 184 students supported in choosing a neighbouring school to attend.
Ginninderra District Parents and Citizens Association has criticised the Government for a lack of consultation, and the ACT Opposition has accused Education Minister Katy Gallagher of reneging on a pre- election promise.
President of the Ginninderra District P&C Jane Tullis said while she recognised the need for continuing improvement of infrastructure and changing educational methods, she was appalled by the lack of consultation from the Government.
