The Dwarves of Belegost were the first to enter Beleriand, and they were among the finest smiths and stone-carvers of Middle-earth.
Though the king of Belegost, Lord Azaghâl, was slain in this battle, he wounded Glaurung and forced the Father of Dragons and all his Dragon brood to flee the battle ground.
Yet, valiant and steadfast as the Dwarves of Belegost were, when the War of Wrath was ended, their kingdom, along with all of Beleriand, was overwhelmed and swallowed up by the sea.

 Encyclopedia of Arda: Belegost
An Elvish name (meaning simply 'Great Fortress') for the Dwarf-citadel that lay near Mount Dolmed in the Blue Mountains, called Gabilgathol by the Dwarves themselves.
Circumstantial evidence given there suggests that the Dwarves of Belegost were unrelated to Durin's Folk, the Longbeards that appear in Tolkien's better-known work, and instead belonged to a different clan, either the Firebeards or the Broadbeams.
The word-order used there suggests that Belegost was founded by the Broadbeams, while nearby Nogrod was populated by the Firebeard clan.
