Belfast Agreement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Belfast Agreement (the Good Friday Agreement and, more rarely, as the Stormont Agreement) was a political development in the Northern Ireland peace process.
It was signed in Belfast on April 10, 1998 (Good Friday) by the British and Irish governments and endorsed by most Northern Ireland political parties.
The overall result of these problems was to damage confidence among unionists in the Agreement, which was exploited by the anti-Agreement DUP which eventually defeated the pro-Agreement UUP in the 2003 Assembly election.

I should not be at all surprised to discover that the Minister of State, when she reads the briefing notes for her speech in response to this debate, will say that the Government are obliged to extend the deadline and that it is not realistic to suppose that decommissioning will be completed by 27 February.
The Belfast agreement, now in place, provided for the whole process of decommissioning to be completed within two years, by July 2000.

 Suspending judgment
Five years on from the signing of the Belfast Agreement (popularly known as the Good Friday Agreement) on 10 April 1998 it is unclear if the Northern Ireland peace process can be held up as an example of good practice.
The Agreement had stated when different processes had to begin, but not when they would be complete, and perhaps his implication was that schemes such as those for decommissioning should be nearing completion.
This in fact was the intention of the Belfast Agreement: that the conflict over equality and constitutional aspirations would be transferred from the streets into the debating chamber where it might be sorted out by constitutional if not co-operative means.

The Belfast Agreement was hailed as a major achievement in the history of relations between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
Their rationale was understandable: the Agreement was supposed to herald the demise of direct rule, and the British government was sensitive to how new locally elected politicians might react to a heavy-handed government in London insisting on running the Agreement.

The DUP accused my party of bringing us closer to a united Ireland because of the Belfast Agreement, that the North/South Ministerial council was not accountable to the Assembly and that Ministers were free to do what they liked on a North/South basis.
This includes wishing to enhance North/South linkages that, under the terms of the Belfast Agreement, were merely to be considered yet the DUP now supports such moves.
