The belfry of Tournai is the oldest one in Belgium.
In the meantime, Tournai was incorporated to the Spanish Netherlands by the treaties of Utrecht (1710) and Rastadt (1714).
In the XVIth century, Tournai was briefly occupied (1513-1518) by King of England Henry VIII (1491-1547) and eventually incorporated to the Spanish Low Countries in 1529 by Charles V (1500-1558).

He may have left Tournai in 1466 and is last recorded in 1468, when he was at Bruges with three assistants to work on the decorations for the marriage festivities of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, and Margaret of York.
The son of a Tournai sculptor, by 1418 he was living in the household of ROBERT CAMPIN, ‘ouvrant de son mestier’, and earning his keep.
By 1461 he was back at Tournai, where he coloured a statue for the Belfry and where in 1464 he took two apprentices.

At the end of la Grand Place about fifty metres from the cathedral is the Belfry which is part of the Belfries of Belgium and France WHS, and this is excellent, the exhibits inside give a great introduction to what these towers represent, it also gives the best views of the cathedral (see picture!).
At first, a Romanesque cathedral was built because Tournai had become seat of a bishopry.
The building of the Cathedral of Tournai lasted from 1146 until 1325.

Kortrijk is highly recommended for a visit, especially to people on holiday who want to see an area of Belgium which is not packed out with tourists.
We had stopped off in Kortrijk in 2002 as we had to change trains there to go to Oudenaarde, but on that occasion it was foggy and we could not see much of the place, so we decided to have a proper look round some time.
