After the overthrow of the Yadavas by the Delhi emperor (1320), Belgaum was for a short time under the rule of the latter; hut only a few years later the part south of the Ghatprabha was subject to the Hindu rajas of Vijayanagar.

BELGAUM: Heavy rain continued to lash the district, particularly the catchment areas of rivers that flow through the district.
The death toll in the district owing to heavy rainfall increased to five with a 49-year-old resident of Jaferwadi drowning in the Markandeya while he was crossing it on the Alatga bridge on Monday evening.
The district administration has advised vehicle users against using the bridge until the water in the river recedes.

Belgaum: The district administration has banned the import of poultry birds and products from Maharashtra as a precautionary measure in the light of the reported outbreak of the dreaded avian flu in that State.

Tensions are rising in Belgaum district after the Karnataka government dismisses the Belgaum Municipal Council for passing a resolution seeking the district's merger with Maharashtra.
All this was in response to a provocative resolution by the Council, which called for the transfer to Maharashtra of Belgaum district and other areas of Karnataka where the Marathi-speaking population is in majority.
Unfortunately, the bandhs called by the MES to protest against the attack on Vijay More and the dissolution of the BCC in Belgaum, Khanapur and Chikkodi, was a replay of the bloody incidents of 1986 when in the `seema ladai' (border agitation), nine persons lost their lives and large-scale arson took place in the city.

March 15: The state government on Thursday ruled out the bifurcation of Belgaum district until the recommendations of the Mahajan Commission report on the Karnataka-Maharashtra border issue were implemented.
Belgaum district was a sensitive issue for the State and it could not be bifurcated under the present conditions Revenue Minister HC Srikantaiah told the Legislative Council today, in reply to a question regarding reorganisation of districts in the State.
The bifurcation of these two districts would be taken up in the coming years, HC Srikantaiah asserted.

 Criminal case filed against Togadia
District authorities had prohibited entry of Togadia into Belgaum district but the Karnataka high court had set it aside.
While setting aside the district magistrate's order, the court had directed that Togadia should not make any derogatory remarks against any religion or community which constituted an offence under sections 153A and 295A of the IPC.
Togadia is already facing a similar case in Chikamagalur district, where he had addressed a rally recently.
