Siege of Antwerp - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As the Belgian army was ill-prepared and outnumbered by the better-armed and more numerous German troops, the Belgian army had to relinquish control of the strongholds of Liège (which fell on August 16) and Namur, which fell into the hands of the Germans on August 24.
October 5 was a crucial date during the Siege of Antwerp; the German army broke through the Belgian defences in the town of Lier, 20 kilometers southeast of Antwerp and moved on to the town of Dendermonde (south of Antwerp) where it attempted to cross the river Scheldt.
Belgian forces fled westwards towards the coast on October 6 eventually stopping the German advance on the banks of the river Yser.

the Tragedy of Belgium and the Fall of Antwerp
The Allied armies of France and Britain were massing on the southern borders of Belgium, and the plan of campaign was that the line should swing forward pivoting on Namur, to drive the invaders from Brussels.
They fully realised that the Belgian army posted at Antwerp in their rear was a standing danger to them, and besides this it forced them to keep a large army to protect Brussels and watch the southern exits of the fortress.
The army north of Brussels, now under the command of General von Beseler, was reinforced with fresh troops, including a naval division and an Austrian contingent which brought with it a number of heavy howitzers to supplement the siege train of the German artillery.
