Belgian Shepherds are bred to be highly intelligent, alert and sensitive to everything going on around them, and to develop extremely strong relationship bonds.
Belgian shepherds like to please, and can over-react badly to "negative" (punishment or deterrence based) training, so they should as a rule be clicker- or reward-trained only.

Belgian Sheepdog Club of America newsletters from May 1953 (the club’s first newsletter) to July 1958 (when the varieties were separated into breeds) reveal that little was known about the history and genetics of the varieties or the role of past intervariety breedings, and nothing was printed about their common ancestry.
Although the AKC separated the Belgians into three breeds 33 years ago, the ancestry of American imports continues to reinforce interdependency, as is evident in the occasional puppies that more closely resemble one of the other Belgian Shepherd Dog breeds that the breed of their parents.

The history of the Belgian Shepherd Dog dates back to the later 1800's when the Belgian Shepherds along with several other types of shepherds including the German, French and Dutch Shepherds, also known at that time as Continental Shepherd dogs, were separated into the different breeds.
It was not until the early 1900's that the Belgian Shepherd was accepted as a true breed and it was at this point that the focus was put on perfecting the standard for the breed and separating the different varieties of Belgian Shepherds.
The Belgian Shepherds were developed as sheep and cattle herding dogs, but also used as guard dogs and as working farm or draught dogs, pulling carts and wagons.

This article does not want to encourage Belgian shepherd amateurs to experiment with intervariety breeding !("Crossbreeding" is not the exact word when it comes to dogs of the same breed.
