Belgian Union - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the center of Europe, it consists of 3 large language groups: Dutch speaking Belgians or Flemings (north Belgians, about 59% of the population), French speaking Belgians or Walloons (south Belgians, about 40% of the population), and German speaking Belgians (East Belgians, about 1% of the population).
The Belgian Union is a centrist party for reconciliation between the language groups, promoting multilingualism, and 1 government and 1 parliament for all Belgians without the division by language (which they consider as racist as a division by skin colour).
They are the only party defending this, all other Belgian parties have, together with the creation of the federal states, been split on a language basis.

The fact that Elio di Rupo was learning Dutch caused rumours that he hoped to become Prime Minister, if the social-democrats would turn out to be the largest political family.
Themes that probably influenced the election results in some way or another were the government's opposition to the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the controversy around the nuisance around the airport of Zaventem, the controversy surrounding the banning of tobacco publicity, and unemployment.

The Liberals and Socialists were the victors in the Belgian general elections on Sunday by winning 97 of the 150 seats in the Belgian Federal Parliament.
But the real losers of these general elections are certainly the Ecologists, who, just four years ago had made a spectacular entry into the government to the backdrop of the dioxin chicken scandal, has now collapsed in both Flanders and Wallonia.
Apart from the Liberal and Socialist victory and the terrible defeat of the ecologist movements, the general elections were also the occasion for new progress to be made by the extreme rightwing movements.
