The line was later extended to Alamein station to serve a newly-built housing estate, and opened on June 28, 1948 as the Alamein line.
The line was also the first in the city to receive new Metlink-branded signage, including the new, blue colour-code for the train network, and signs directing passengers to connecting tram and bus services.

 Puffing Billy
The present line between Belgrave and Gembrook is all that remains of the 29 km (18 mile), 762 mm (2'6") gauge line which operated between Upper Ferntree Gully and Gembrook from 1900 to 1953.
Public interest in the line resulted in the formation of the Puffing Billy Preservation Society which, with the blessings of the Victorian Railways and the assistance of the Citizens' Military Forces, succeeded in by-passing the landslide and reopening the line as far as Menzies Creek in 1962.
The line was subsequently restored and reopened to Emerald in 1965, extended to Lakeside in 1975, and then in 1988, rebuilt and reopened to Cockatoo and Gembrook.

This narrow gauge track (2 feet 6 inches or 76.2 centimetres between the rails) is the sole survivor of the four narrow gauge lines built in Victoria at the turn of the last century to serve remote areas.
In 1934, the Transport Regulation Board recommended closure of the Gembrook line and in the 1940s, there were moves to convert it to broad gauge and electrify it as far as Emerald.
Easy access is also available by electric train from Melbourne, in around one hour and ten minutes, with a short walk from the electric train station to the Puffing Billy station.

This is Comeng motor coach 322M at Belgrave on Sunday 6th February 1999 during the proving trials of a prototype traction control system which I had been heavily involved with over the previous year.
Belgrave is the summit of the electrified network in Melbourne and is approached over a long steep gradient, so is a favourite place for test trains to operate to.
This 38-span timber trestle viaduct crosses Diamond Creek (behind the camera) just south of Eltham station on the Hurstbridge line from Melbourne, and is the last surviving such structure on the Melbourne suburban network.

Although this is the end of our train journey it isn't the end of our association with the railway because we return Lakeside (Emerald Park/Lake) for a B-B-Q lunch.

There is a train line that finishes out at springvale, and a few kilometres down the round is a really good place called springers which suprisingly ayl doesnt know about.
And because it is the main asian community in melbourne you should be able to find plenty of action around there.
