 Maritime Explorations
The Belitung Shipwreck (also known as the Tang or Batu Hitam Shipwreck) was found by fishermen off the Indonesian Island of Belitung in 1998.
The German group, Seabed Explorations, purchased the location from the fishermen and began excavation under license in the latter part of the same year.
It seems that the Belitung Wreck is the only example of an ancient Arab or Indian ship ever found.

Situated on the eastern side of the Bukit Barisan mountain range the province of South Sumatra is relatively flat, nevertheless fertile, as numerous rivers crisscross and meander through out the region.
Adjacent to Bangka island is Belitung island, another tin producer, with its capital city called Tanjung Pandan.
If you are interested in visiting both islands, the best way to do it is to leave by air from Jakarta to either island first, and then cross over to the other one by boat and onward to Palembang to visit the rest of South Sumatera.

 Lighthouses of Indonesia
This lighthouse guides ships through the Gelasa Strait, between Bangka and Belitung; the strait is important because it is a shortcut route between Singapore and Jakarta.
This lighthouse is just off the northwestern point of Belitung, facing the Karimata Strait, which joins the South China Sea to the Java Sea between Sumatra and Kalimantan (Borneo).
KITLV has a historic photo of the original lighthouse, which was similar to the Karang Takarewataya (Den Bril) lighthouse south of Sulawesi.

The recent find of the shipwreck in the seas off Belitung Island in Indonesia has yielded over fifty thousand pieces of Changsha wares on board the sunken ship named “Black Rock” or “Batu Hitam” in Malay.
It provided concrete evidence that in Gongxian of Henan province, the kiln workers had already produced such wares for export to the Arabic world but the quantity produced had been so limited that such a find was very rare.
When ceramics were fired with a combination of high phosphorus and low alumina content in the copper glaze, a bluish green tone as a surface colour would be produced, which was once believed to have been caused by cobalt.
