Belknap volcano is a well preserved Holocene example of the type of volcanic process responsible for construction of the Pleistocene High Cascade platform.
Belknap is intermediate in scale between diminutive cinder cones with small lava flows such as Twin Craters or Yapoah Cone (south of Belknap) and larger composite cones on a shield base which may reach elevations of 2,500 meters, such as Mt.

Crater Lake was "discovered" by John Wesley Hillman's in 1853, though Native Americans were aware of its existence prior to that.
Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States, and the seventh deepest in the world.
It is possible to hike around the crater at the top of Wizard Island (the crater at the top is known as Witches Cauldron), but it's necessary to arrive there via the tourist boat (runs from early July to mid-September).

Belknap Crater: Focal point of a long-continued and complex episode of Holocene basalt and basaltic andesite volcanism.
Belknap in central Oregon is the youngest such shield volcano in the Cascades and has lava flows as young as 1,400 years.

Crater Peak is located within the southern portion of the Cascade Mountain Range in the 16,335 acre Thousand Lakes Wilderness.

Newberry Caldera, 75 miles northeast of Crater Lake and 15 miles south of Central Oregon's largest urban population (the city of Bend), rests atop a 500 square mile shield volcano.
Lava flows only 1400 years old are found ten miles north of the Sisters, at 6,782 foot Belknap Crater, the youngest shield volcano in the Cascades.

Isolated ridges of lava and hydrothermally altered rock, especially in the area of Sherman Crater, are exposed between glaciers on the upper flanks of the volcano: the lower flanks are steep and heavily vegetated.
Subordinate silicic magmas were erupted intermittently; andesite, dacite, and rhyodacite lavas, intrusives, and pyroclastic flow deposits are associated with the predominant mafic lavas from the lower flanks to the summit of the volcano.
Crater Lake caldera formed by collapse during the catastrophic eruption of approximately 50 cubic kilometers of magma, 6,845 carbon-14 years B.P. (before present).

Late-stage eruptions from the NE base of Belknap crater produced lava flows that traveled 15 km west into the McKenzie River valley.
The narrow McKenzie Pass highway provides seasonal access across the barren lava fields with spectacular views toward Mt. Jefferson and the Three Sisters.

The trail to Little Belknap follows the PCT north 2.4 miles, then a.2 mile side trip to top of Little Belknap, 6300 feet.
The first part of trail skirts two tree islands then on to the lava flow for the rest of the route.
I like to get up there once a year, including a climb of Belknap Crater last summer.

I had a great hike last weekend with my two children (8 and 11) and a friend up to the summit of Little Belknap Crater, just north of McKenzie Pass.
The trail is the PCT where it crosses Hwy 242, about.4 miles west of the Dee Wright Observatory.
It was the only place we saw where the rocks were red instead of gray, so it really sticks out.
