The clapper may be fastened to the inside of the bell, or it may be a separate hand-held or mechanically or electrically moved hammer that strikes the outside rim (as in an electronically operated doorbell).
Bells are classified as idiophones (instruments in which resonant solid material vibrates to produce sound); they vibrate primarily near the rim.
The casting of bells declined in late antiquity, and handbells of the cowbell type came into use; these were made of thin metal plates bent into rectangles and fastened with rivets.

Bell and Ross came to the market in 1992 determined to offer high quality Swiss timepieces to professionals in extreme working environments (see Bell & Ross: Watches for Professionals).
The Instrument Collection has become the symbol of the company's brand image, and will likely be their calling card for many years to come.
While Bell and Ross may want you to believe that their Instrument collection is for serious professionals, I believe that these watches will be very intriguing to the enthusiast who appreciates style and passion over brand and history.

Cool Hunting: Bell & Ross Instrument Series
Earlier this month, at Baselworld 2005, one of my all time favorite watch manufacturers Bell & Ross announced their new Instrument Series.
It wasn't until Gizmodo picked it up today from a post on Watch Report that I tuned in, but better a few weeks late than never.
The series is based on the design of cockpit instrumentation and includes an automatic, a chrono, a big date and a chrono model in both stainless and carbon finishes with fl or white faces.
