  Iron Ore Mines of Bell Island: Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage
The Pitt family opened a brickyard on Bell Island in 1848, and the Rees family operated a shipyard on the island, in Lance Cove, for a period during the 1800s.
However, for Bell Island, as elsewhere, the move away from a small-scale, diversified local economy based on a number of industries, toward a single-resource economy based on an industry which extracts and exports a non-renewable resource, carries with it obvious consequences.
Buildings on the island display a series of large murals depicting various facets of mining history, and plans are underway to renovate and re-open one of the mines as a tourist attraction.

 Bell Island History from Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador
Bell Rock, which gave the island its name, is located off the northwestern end of the island and is separated from it by a gap of several metres.
The island is unprotected from the prevailing winds, which are west and southwesterly in the winter and southwesterly in the summer.
In 1981 the inhabitants of Bell Island made their living in a number of ways: some commuted to jobs in and around the St. John's area, and some were employed in health, education and service jobs.

Newfoundland, one of the four Atlantic provinces of Canada, consisting of the island of Newfoundland and, on the mainland, a coastal portion of the Labrador region.
The Labrador portion (296,860 sq km/114,618 sq mi) is separated from the island by the Strait of Belle Isle; it is bounded on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and on the south and west by Québec Province.
In the eastern part of the island of Newfoundland, the climate is moderated by marine influences, and winters are much milder and summers are warmer and longer.

Bell Island was one of the very few locations on the North American landmass to see enemy action during the war.
After the Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway was built in the latter part of the decade, Bell Island iron ore became uncompetitive.
