ESPN.com: MLB - 'Operation Shutdown' in effect? Bell leaves Pirates
Bell was living this spring on a luxury boat that was anchored near downtown Bradenton, just as he lived on a boat while playing for the Mets several years ago.
Bell's contract is one of two big-money deals the Pirates are expected to shed this weekend.
Bell's future in Pittsburgh already was in doubt after he hit only.173 with five homers and 13 RBI last season and quickly became one of the most unpopular players in team history.

Bell Labs: The Science Behind the Nobel
The historical roots of the fractional quantum Hall effect go back to the previous century, before the laws of quantum mechanics - the laws that govern the behavior of matter - were known to physicists.
In 1879, Edwin Hall, a graduate student at Johns Hopkins University, discovered that, when a magnetic field was applied perpendicularly to a thin metal sheet that was conducting current, a small electrical voltage appeared that was perpendicular to both the sheet and the magnetic field.
This "anomalous" effect took the physics community by surprise and came to be known as the fractional quantum Hall effect.

Bell's postdoctoral research involved analysis of alterations of vascular contraction caused by exposure to serotonin, investigation of coronary vascular smooth muscle function in hypertension, and determination of how elevated arterial pressure in chronic hypertension alters vascular sensitivity to vasoconstrictor and vasodilator drugs.
Bell's work at Henry Ford Hospital included studies of the interrelationship between intermyocardial pressure and cardiac oxygen consumption as well as investigation of the role of blood flow stresses in both the development of atherosclerosis and alteration of contractile mechanisms in arteries.
Bell has completed studies showing that physiological levels of estrogen directly enhance, whereas progesterone inhibits the ability of coronary arteries to relax in response to activation of their endothelial nitric oxide system.

The Bell Effect, also known colloquially as "bells", is a technique used in musical arrangement where single notes of a chord are played in sequence by different instruments which sustain their individual notes to allow the chord to be heard.
It is, in effect, an arpeggio played by several instruments sequentially.
The bell effect is also claimed as an influence by Brian May of rock band Queen, especially on the famous solo to Killer Queen.

Accordingly, Bell Atlantic's second request for clarification is a claim that the Commission's discussion of the appropriateness of termination charges beginning on page 14 of the order is not essential to the Commission's decision and should be deleted.
The first point Bell Atlantic wishes clarified is a sentence stating that "Bell Atlantic argued that it should collect a termination fee upon processing CTC orders which assume an end users's contract." This sentence does not mis-state the argument Bell Atlantic advanced at hearing.
Bell Atlantic, as its third point for clarification, asserts that the orders cited do not hold that the imposition of termination charges for assignment of an end user contract represents an unreasonable restriction on resale.

Introduction to the acoustics of brass instruments (lip reeds)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
The bell also contributes to this effect: in the rapidly flaring bell, the long waves (with the low pitches) are least able to follow the curve of the bell and so are effectively reflected earlier than are the shorter waves.
This is explained by one of the effects of the bell discussed previously: the bell radiates the high frequency (short wavelength) waves so well that we get rather little reflection.
We saw above some of the effects of the bell: apart from its effect on tuning, it radiates the high harmonics well and it is these strong, high harmonics in the output sound that make brass instruments sound 'brassy'.

This is accomplished by forcing the resonant frequencies toward the harmonic frequencies with the acoustic effects of the bell and mouthpiece.
The mouthpiece forces the upper resonances down (the mouthpiece effect) and the bell forces the lower resonances up (the bell effect).
When the bell effect raises the lower resonances of the closed tube, the lowest resonance is actually not used, being out of tune with the rest of the notes.

Bell then goes on to note that TCG Pittsburgh's and NEXTLINK Communications tariffs presently contain tariffs that contain similar safeguards and limitations in that they both contain the $40,000 limitation and the requirement that the tariff be filed with the Commission under proprietary seal.
Bell notes that if it already has the ability to offer customized individual contracts for business telecommunications service in response to customer requests, it is difficult to imagine why the Opponents would be so vehement in their opposition.
Bell believes that AT&T's allegation that the proposed ICB tariff will allow Bell to favor one segment of customers over another without justification, and even refuse to offer the same terms to similarly-situated customers, is meritless because the existence of competitive alternatives has long been an acceptable basis for distinguishing among customers.

Recent theoretical developments in quantum theory known as the EPR effect (named Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen's 1935 paper on the quantum connection between spatially separated systems), now formulated in a theorem by John S. Bell (called Bell's Theorem), allow for the an instantaneous effect between any two places in the physical universe.
Bell's theorem enables one to calculate what the r`0d of simultaneous arrival should be if the statistical predictions of quantum theory are correct.

Bell Labs: The Fractional Quantum Hall Effect
Murray Hill, N.J. (Oct. 13, 1998) -- This year's Nobel Prize in Physics is yet another triumph for quantum mechanics, one of the cornerstones of modern physics.
The historical roots of the fractional quantum Hall effect go back to the previous century, before the laws of quantum mechanics -- the laws that govern the behavior of matter -- were known to physicists.
Two years after von Klitzing's discovery, at Murray Hill, Stormer and Tsui were also studying the quantum Hall effect, using extremely high quality gallium arsenide-based samples that were made by Bell Labs scientist Arthur Gossard.

The dilemma into which Einstein, Rosen and Podolsky dragged the quantum theory was a profound one, that came to be known as the ERP Effect, after the three of them.

Recall that one of the possibilities embodied in Bell's theorem involves the non-local features of the universe: objects once in contact, though separated spatially, and placed at distant ends of the universe, are somehow remain in contact.

 The Kochen-Specker Theorem
Bell (1966: 6-8) offers a variant with a particular twist which later is repeated as the crucial step in the KS theorem.
However, while the Gleason argument and Bell's variant assume value assignments for a continuum of vectors in the Hilbert space, KS are able to explicitly present a discrete, even finite set of observables in the space for which an HV value assignment would lead to inconsistency.
Bell had established it in a different way and had then argued that in a noncontextual HV interpretation points with opposite colour must be arbitrarily close.
