The name currently used by the Nuxalk Nation and for the language is an anglicization of the word /nuxalk/ "Bella Coola Valley".

Bigfoot: Tales of the Bella Coola Boqs...
The Bella Coola Indians of British Columbia describe the boq much the same as the sasquatch in that it somewhat resembles a man, its hands especially and the region around the eyes being distinctly human.
Not many years ago a certain Bella Coola man named Qaklis was camped with his wife and child in the Bay of the Thousand Islands, Altukwlaksos, which is about two miles above Namu, the latter being one of the haunts of the boqs.
Looking up he saw that the mountains were higher than usual and according to Bella Coola belief the boqs had by their supernatural power raised the whole area so that the water had been almost entirely drained away.

Reduplication in Bella Coola (Abstract)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
For example, Bella Coola, a Salish language, has been proposed to have no syllables at all (Newman 1947), or to allow any obstruent to constitute a syllable nucleus (Hoard 1978).
Reduplication is of interest to phonologists because it identifies a string of segments that is not identical to a preexisting morpheme.
Reduplication in Bella Coola thus cannot be explained without reference to gestural coordination, a fact that provides further evidence for the relevance of gestural coordination in phonological representation.

Reduplication cannot be explained without reference to gestural coordination
Using articulatory gestures as the basic unit of analysis (following Browman and Goldstein 1992), I argue in this paper that reduplication in Bella Coola is best analyzed as the copying of a contiguous sequence of overlapping gestures.
It follows that Bella Coola reduplication requires reference to a level of representation below the segment, namely, gestures and their timing relations.
