The extraordinary pianist was Madame Bella Davidovich, who had been originally scheduled earlier in the season, and the concerto she championed was Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2, in f minor.
Davidovich soon gave us in her version of the same themes – tender, lingering romance, liberally interwoven with the lacy filigree of runs and arpeggios that are typical of the idiom Chopin invented.
Davidovich certainly doesn't lack strength, as she powered herself through the quasi-recitative of the otherwise wistful and plaintive second movement.

Davidovich plays with affection, and above all with sparkle, and it is hard to imagine the music sounding better (TRACK9: 0.00).
Haydn was evidently fond of this piece, originally composed in 1767, since he returned to it in 1782, when he made the definitive version which is always heard today.

Davidovich combed the keys as if with a feather, coaxing the movement's intimate strains with such fluidity that her occasional use of rubato (free time) was nearly imperceptible.
In terms of pure resonance, Davidovich's shading of tone was delicious to behold.
Except for her rather stiffly voiced account of the piano's opening statement, Davidovich's performance was thoroughly enthralling.

So it was anything but certain that last night's recital by Dmitry Sitkovetsky and Bella Davidovich, who are son and mother, would turn out well.
Sitkovetsky's violin and Miss Davidovich's piano met on the level of impeccable musicianship and stylistic elegance.
Drawing an uncommonly rich and varied tone from the piano, partly owing to generous use of pedal but also because of her ability to play at any dynamic level without brittleness or ugly crash, she took the lead boldly whenever the music so required.

Davidovich took the first movement with a lighter thread than other versions I've heard, and yet there is still something femininely noble about it.

CONCERT: BELLA DAVIDOVICH - New York Times
Andrew Davis conducted, Bella Davidovich was soloist in the second Piano Concerto in G; as a counterweight to the familar Fourth Symphony, there was ''Voyevoda,'' an almost forgotten ''Symphonic Ballad'' written two years before the composer's death.
The piece adds little to his reputation - its ominous mood eventually graying into monotony, and its orchestration sounding equally gray next to the ingenious brilliance of the concerto and the symphony that followed on the program.
She was, as usual, a scrupulous and thoroughly professional musician; and in the finale, her playing came very close to being exciting.
