American Airlines Flight 587 crashes into the Belle Harbor neighborhood of Queens in New York City shortly after takeoff from John F. Kennedy International Airport on November 12, 2001.
Ground Zero is several miles west of where I live, Belle Harbor is several miles to the east.
Belle Harbor was hit hard on 9/11 as many firefighter and police officers live in the area.

Belle Harbor is a neighborhood in southern Queens (in New York City) located along Rockaway Beach.
On November 12, 2001, American Airlines Flight 587, bound for Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, crashed in the center of Belle Harbor, killing all 260 passengers and crew on board the plane as well as five people on the ground.
Belle Harbor is a suburban enclave on the Rockaway Peninsula, on what amounts to a narrow barrier island sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean to the south and Jamaica Bay to the north.

 Belle Harbor Man Indicted in Murder Plot
A Belle Harbor man, already being prosecuted for conspiring to sexually mutilate his girlfriend’s ex-husband for the rape of the divorced couple’s teenaged daughter, has been indicted on new charges of conspiring to murder a state prison inmate who had tipped off authorities about the assault-for-hire plot.
It is alleged in the indictment that on April 14, 2003 the undercover officer sent Quinn a response letter and told Quinn that he would kill the inmate, a key witness in the defendant’s pending assault-for-hire case in Queens Criminal Court, and requested a photograph of the inmate.
The District Attorney said that the target of the assault-for-hire plot which is alleged to have led to the subsequent murder-for hire plot was a 61-year-old Queens resident, Quinn’s girlfriend’s ex-husband, whose name is not being disclosed to protect the identity of his daughter, a sex crime victim.

The city selected Dominican artist Freddy Rodriguez to design the Belle Harbor, Queens, memorial honoring the 265 people killed in the November 2001 crash, Mayor Bloomberg announced yesterday.
The final memorial design will be developed in collaboration with the city's Department of Parks and Recreation and in consultation with the victims' families and the Belle Harbor community.
