Belleau Wood, near Chateau Thierry, France, was the scene of a World War I battle, 6 June 1918.
Belleau Wood was launched 6 December 1942 by New York Shipbuilding Corp., Camden, N. J.; sponsored by Mrs.
On 30 October, while Belleau Wood was patrolling with her task group east of Leyte, she shot down a Japanese suicide plane which fell on her flight deck aft causing fires which set off ammunition.

The USS Belleau Wood Marine Amphibious Ready Group left the Persian Gulf on 27 January 1999, and was replaced by the USS Boxer, which arrived on 24 January 1999.
The USS Belleau Wood continued to operate in the Arabian Gulf in support of operations near or in Yemen and as of late September is expected to join the rest of the ARG off of the coast of Kuwait.

Belleau Wood (CVI~24) was commissioned on March 31, 1943 at the Philadelphia Navy Yard with Captain Alfred M. Pride, USN as first commanding officer.
Belleau Wood's contribution to this score was three enemy planes shot down, two damaged, a medium freighter and a mine layer sunk and one hangar destroyed.
Belleau Wood and Franklin, accompanied by screening destroyers left the task group on 31 October for Ulithi where it was found that Belleau Wood's damage could not be repaired in that forward area.

BELLEAU WOOD is the third ship in the TARAWA class and the first amphibious assault ship homeported outside the United States.
In 2000, the BELLEAU WOOD was relieved by the USS ESSEX (LHD 2) which became the new forward deployed amphibious assault ship in Sasebo, Japan.

Belleau Wood, west of the town of Lucy-le-Bocage, was not one solid mass of forest, but made up of many one- to five-acre patches of woods with oat and wheat fields in between.

As a consequence of the open nature of the advance on the wood, casualties on the first day, 6 June, were the highest in Marine Corps history (a dubious record which remained until the capture of Japanese-held Tarawa in November 1943).
Fiercely defended by the Germans, the wood was first taken by the Marines (and Third Infantry Brigade), then ceded back to the Germans - and again taken by the U.S. forces a total of six times before the Germans were finally expelled.
The French name for the wood, Bois Belleau, was subsequently officially renamed Bois de la Brigade de Marine, in honour of the Marine Corps's tenacity in its re-taking.
