They are believed to be formed from the unusual remnants of the supernova that produced the pulsar, in a second round of planet formation; or the rocky cores that remain of gas giants that survived the supernova, and spiralled in to their current orbits.
Extrasolar planets around solar-type stars began to be discovered in large numbers during the late 1990s as a result of improved telescope technology, such as CCD and computer-based image processing.
The frequency of extrasolar planets is one of the parameters in the Drake equation, which attempts to estimate the probability of communications with extraterrestrial intelligence.

 Pegasus
He was caught by Bellerophon at the waters of his fountain, and ridden by him when he slew the Chimaera, a fabulous monster with a Lion's head, a goat's body and a dragon's tail (hence the name in English for an illusory fancy, a wild incongruous scheme).
Pegasus was born at the Ocean springs, Bellerophon found it drinking from the Pyrenean spring and Pegasus made water spring from the mountain-side by striking it with his hooves.
Being summoned to the palace of King Proetus of Tiryns, Bellerophon was approached by the king's wife, Stheneboea (Anteia).

The planet Mars, then, according to de Santillana and von Dechend, is to be understood as brave, swift, impetuous, and male.
As we have documented, the position of Mars with respect to the polar column fluctuated with the evolution of the polar configuration, the red planet alternately appearing as a tiny orb set within the center of Venus and as a giant orb beneath the outlines of Saturn.
It is the latter scenario which inspired the conception of the Martian hero upholding the heavens with his upraised arms, the hero's arms being strictly synonymous with the recumbant crescent.

The Neptune file; a story of astronomical rivalry and the pioneers of planet hunting.
Examines reports of observations made during the years 1878-83, when the spot was particularly prominent, and shows how they were used to determine more precisely the planet's rotation period--an effort which resulted in the conclusion that Jupiter's surface was not solid and, like the sun, exhibited differential rotation.
