Cheaper by the Dozen 2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Steve Martin, Bonnie Hunt, Hilary Duff, Piper Perabo, and Tom Welling reprise their roles as members of the twelve-child Baker family.
The film did not follow the storyline of the novel Belles on Their Toes, which was a sequel book to the original Cheaper by the Dozen novel.
(Belles on Their Toes was made into a film in 1952 as a follow-up to the 1950 film version of Cheaper by the Dozen.)

The style, stodgy though it may be, overwhelms you with the houseness of the family house and the hominess of every stick of furniture--everywhere you turn, you're confronted with the idyllic nature of the whole enterprise.
Belles on their Toes therefore deals with the highly un-patrician story of Frank's widow, Lillian (Myrna Loy), who despite being an engineer like her husband was barely alluded to in the first film.
Also included is the film's trailer, plus trailers for Belles on their Toes and the Cheaper by the Dozen remake and a two-minute "Movietone News" segment showing the 1950 version being presented a family entertainment award by one Father Keller.

dOc DVD Review: Belles on Their Toes (1952) - Printable
Following up on the success of 1950's Cheaper by the Dozen, its sequel, Belles on Their Toes, picks up where the first left off, in the continuing story of the Gilbreth family.
Their new situation means many adjustments to keep the family budget, since despite her husband's credentials and her equal part in his research, the early twentieth century has no place for a woman in the sciences, and she faces discrimination from the industries and engineering societies utilizing their life's work.
Lighthearted with some semblance of drama, Belles on Their Toes is a heartwarming sequel that bests the original, which is not totally forgotten as the story pays tribute to Frank Sr.

"Belles on Their Toes" picks up where the Gilbreth family left off in "Cheaper by the Dozen." While many sequels leave much to be desired this sequel is even better than the predecessor.
In BOTT, the viewer doesn't get nearly as much a sense of period authenticity and details as in the original; it looks more like something from the Fifties instead of a story taking place in the Twenties.
Missing all of these important events that really set the mood for how much this family cared for one another and what a great job they did getting by on their own, one doesn't really feel quite as connected to the characters and the plot as in the original.

Belles on their Toes probably wouldn't have made a good 50s TV sitcom because of the stiff payroll and child labor laws - the biggest TV families had at most three kids.
