The boulevards Belleville and Ménilmontant that set the boundaries of the northern 20th to the west are named after two villages that were annexed by the city of Paris in 1860.
Belleville was the more notorious of the two - it was one of two strongholds of the fierce Communards of 1871.
Sweeping views of Paris from the terraced Parc de Belleville and the rue de Ménilmontant are reminders that this was once remote territory to which Parisians repaired to leave behind the doldrums of city life.

In the mid 1980's, another Chinatown sprouted in another part of Paris: Belleville, in the northwestern section of the city.
Belleville, which was the home of Edith Piaf and Maurice Chevalier, has been for the longest time the neighborhood where new immigrants would settle.
Located on the Avenue Foch, the most prestigious Paris address, in a Napoleon III "hotel particulier", it is a stunning place.

The commercial district along Boulevard Belleville in the 20th arrondissment, is typical of many dilapidated, low-income, immigrant districts in Paris that lie in the fringe areas just outside the historic center.
The blocks in this part of Paris consist of a building stock that varies greatly in age, style and condition, but typically buildings front the street in a regular line while the interior of the block is a much more random pattern of solid and void.
In the late 1980's and early 1990's the Régie immobiliére de la Ville de Paris (RIVP) was rebuilding several projects in the blocks along and adjacent to Boulevard Belleville and, in 1987, Borel was selected as the architect for two RIVP projects in the block between Blvd. Belleville, rue Ramponeau and rue Bisson.

During the Second Empire, les Halles (formerly Paris' outdoor market) was comprised of ten glass-roofed, structured pavilions which were subsequently dismantled and moved to the Paris suburbs.
The Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau offers descriptions of 28 major parks and gardens in and near the city, picturesque river banks, quays and canals, memorable fountains, remarkable trees (the oldest one was planted in 1601!), and zoos.
