 Border Counties Railway
There was a mine at Falstone which had its rail served screen by the railway and near the station.
There are occasional rumours of the re-opening of the Border Union Railway to Riccarton from Carlisle and then the Border Counties Railway to Kielder in connection with the Kielder forrestry.
This was a fairly substancial station having a waggonway branch which ran from here (where there were workshops, coke ovens, screens and a brickworks), up Slater's incline, to the Plashetts and Far Colliery.

 Bellingham
It was revived in 1892 as the name of a new railway station, then in open country, on the Nunhead and Shortlands Railway.
The land for the Bellingham Estate (Bellingham Farm and part of White House Farm) was bought in 1920, and building of the main estate was completed in 1923.
Because there was plenty of land available, most of the dwellings could be two-storey houses with gardens (rather than flats) interspersed with open spaces and trees.

 The Bellingham Heritage Centre
The Border Counties Railway was built between 1855 and 1862, running from Hexham station on the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway, up the North Tyne valley to Bellingham and across the border into Scotland, joining the Carlisle to Edinburgh line at Riccarton Junction, an isolated settlement with no road access.
There are hundreds of maps and historic photographs of the line, its stations and buildings, staff and traffic, and artefacts ranging from tickets and sign boards to railwaymen's lamps and tools and even the original Bellingham station clock!
The Heritage Centre at Bellingham is now the only place where many mementoes of this lost railway are preserved.

Beyond here the trackbed has also been built over but it is possible to see where the railway crossed Newington Road and Allenby Road, this being quite close to the present Ramsgate Station.
Soon after closure the section of trackbed from Westwood Industrial Estate to the present Ramsgate Station was used as the route of a high-voltage overhead electricity line to Ramsgate Power Station, situated in Princes Road, Ramsgate.
There is a road bridge, now closed to vehicles, over the railway cutting, which now diverges from Nash Road and runs towards the Westwood Industrial Estate where the course of the railway has been built over.

 Memories of September 1939 - June 1944
Railway Staff were entitled to Privilege tickets offering cheap travel, but a form had to be completed and signed by the stationmaster before travel, which made impromptu journeys difficult.
I was friendly with one of the station inspectors and was once allowed to try my hand at the brake, performing commendably well, though it was an unnerving experience running a heavy railway van downhill with only a primitive brake between you and disaster.
The station had coal fires in most of the offices and the waiting rooms and the porters and ticket collectors rooms had coal fires which had to be kept going from early morning to late night.
