Major islands in the sea include Alexander I, Peter I (both named by Bellingshausen), and Charcot islands.

It is separated from the Tyrrhenian Sea to the east by Sardinia and Corsica and abuts the Alboran Sea to the west.
It is mostly underlain by a small trough extending to the west of the Flores Trough and is bound by sills to the south (the 200 m Bali Strait and the 220 m Lombok Strait) and by a narrow, 600 m deep passage connecting it to the Makassar Stait to the north.
The Bismarck Sea is bounded to the southwest by New Guinea and to the north, east, and south by the Bismarck Archipelago.

The Bellinsghausen Sea is described as the area north, northwest and west of Alexander Island.
The sea was not given its name until the French Antarctic Expedition to the same area in 1908 to 1910.
There are a lot of icebergs and ice floes in the Bellingshausen Sea today, but during the last ice age this area was filled with ice that extended to the sea floor all across the continental shelf.

In the Ross Sea and the Weddell Sea, the concentrations of dissolved silica in the bottom waters bathing the continental slope and rise are typically 120-135 µmol/L (Jacobs, 1989; Rutgers van der Loeff and van Bennekom, 1989).
At the continental margins in the Ross Sea and the Weddell Sea, the ratio of opal accumulation in the surface sediments to primarily produced opal in the surface water was estimated to be 0.1%-10% (DeMaster et al., 1996; Nelson et al., 1996; Schlüter et al., 1998).
At present, the duration of sea-ice coverage in the Bellingshausen Sea is controlled by atmospheric heat supply and by upwelling of warm CDW (Hofmann et al., 1996; Jacobs and Comiso, 1997).

Parkinson examined 21 years (1979-1999) of Antarctic sea ice satellite records and discovered that, on average, the area where southern sea ice seasons have lengthened by at least one day per year is roughly twice as large as the area where sea ice seasons have shortened by at least one day per year.
The length of the sea ice season in any particular region or area refers to the number of days per year when at least 15 percent of that area is covered by sea ice.
To calculate the lengths of the sea ice seasons, Parkinson used satellite data gridded to 25 by 25 kilometer grid cells for the Southern Ocean region.

Bellingshausen Sea is located between Thurston Island on the West and the Antarctic Peninsula on the East.
In younger history, the ice extent in the Bellingshausen Sea decreased at a rate of roughly 8 percent per decade.
This may suggest that the ice cover lost in the Bellingshausen Sea has actually migrated to the Ross Sea and reflects the large changes in the physical characteristics of the ice cover in this region.

The Bellingshausen Sea is a region where relatively discrete populations of krill and other holozooplankton might be maintained, by virtue of a regional gyral circulation, which may restrict communication with adjacent seas.
Relatively little information exists on plankton distributions in the Bellingshausen Sea, although the nearby waters of the Antarctic Peninsula region are perhaps the best studied in all the Southern Ocean.
This is particularly important because waters from the Bellingshausen Sea provide some of the flow through the northern reaches of the Antarctic Peninsula coastal region, and thus the fauna of the Bellingshausen are already reasonably well known.

Supposing that sea-ice coverage within the Antarctic Zone was the main factor controlling biological productivity in the Bellingshausen Sea, and thus the estimated opal depositional rates on the continental rise, we reconstructed paleoceanographic long-term changes during the Neogene and Quaternary considering the climatic control on regional and on global scales.
During the late Miocene, temperatures in the Bellingshausen Sea as well as in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean were slightly warmer than at present.
A strong productivity increase in the Bellingshausen Sea before the closure of the Panama Isthmus might indicate that initial strengthening in NCW flow reported at ~5 Ma was at least partly triggered by early warming in Antarctica and the adjacent Southern Ocean.

Data collected from a voyage of RV Nathaniel B. Palmer to the Bellingshausen and Amundsen Seas during August- September 1993 are used to investigate the thickness distribution of sea ice and snow cover, and the processes that influence the development of the first year pack ice.
The data are a combination of in situ and ship-based measurements, and show that the process of floe thickening is highly dependent on ice deformation; in particular rafting and ridging play important roles at different stages of floe development.

Nitrous oxide in the Bellingshausen sea and Drake passage
Concentrations of dissolved and atmospheric nitrous oxide, NO, were measured in the austral spring of 1992 in the Drake Passage and Bellingshausen Sea as part of the UK-JGOFS, STERNA expedition to the Southern Ocean.
The measured atmospheric mixing ratio was 313 5 ppbv, in agreement with the hemispherically corrected global mean.

Close inspection of the image reveals that snow on the land appears raised, has a rougher texture than the sea ice, and appears slightly shadowed.
Out in the open sea, tidal forces and water movement can break up the sea ice into large pieces.
