Gaius Julius Caesar: Commentaries on the Gallic War, Book 2
The Bellovaci, withdrawing from the warfare to return home, are pursued by the Romans and suffer severely.—XII.
That the Bellovaci were the most powerful among them in valor, influence, and the number of men; that these could muster 100,000 armed men, [and had] promised 60,000 picked men out of that number, and demanded for themselves the command of the whole war.
“The Bellovaci had at all times been in the alliance and friendship of the Aeduan state; that they had revolted from the Aedui and made war upon the Roman people, being urged thereto by their nobles, who said that the Aedui, reduced to slavery by Caesar, were suffering every indignity and insult.

The Internet Classics Archive | The Gallic Wars by Julius Caesar
As soon as his troops were collected, he marched against the Bellovaci: and pitching his camp in their territories, detached troops of horse all round the country, to take prisoners, from whom he might learn the enemy's plan.
After spending several days in the same camp, the guards of the Bellovaci, learning that Caius Trebonius was advancing nearer with his legions, and fearing a siege like that of Alesia, send off by night all who were disabled by age or infirmity, or unarmed, and along with them their whole baggage.
That, however, the Bellovaci had derived from the battle one advantage, of some importance, considering their loss; that Correus, the author of the rebellion, and agitator of the people, was slain: for that while he lived the senate had never equal influence in the state with the giddy populace.

 Belgae Information
Tribes who belonged to the Belgae included the warlike and influential Bellovaci who took a leading role in the councils of the Belgae, the Suessiones with territories as well in Britannia, the warlike Nervii, the Atrebates, Ambiani, Morini, Menapii, Caleti, Veliocasses, Viromandui.
He writes that the Belgae were conspiring and arming themselves in response to his earlier conquests, and in response to this threat he raised two new legions and ordered his Gallic allies the Aedui to invade the territory of the Bellovaci.
Realising they could not dislodge the Romans and aware of the approach of the Aedui to the lands of the Bellovaci, the Belgae decided to disband their combined force and return to their own lands.

The Celtic Tribes of Roman Gaul
As a tribe, the Bellovaci occupied the region of the current French department of Oise and seem to have been the predominant craftsmen of the Belgic tribes.
After their defeat the capital of the Bellovaci's territory became Caesaromagus (modern-day Beauvais whose name is derived from that of the tribe).
Caesar mentions that the Suessiones were in conflict with the neighbouring Bellovaci, though by the time of Caesar the Suessiones may have become the more powerful and had client tribes in the form of the Meldi and the Silvanecti (as indicated by territorial and numismatic evidence).

The Bellovaci in particular, equal to the Suessiones in power, and already dissatisfied that the supreme command of the confederate army had not fallen to them, could no longer be detained after news had arrived that the Haedui as allies of the Romans were making preparations to enter the Bellovacic territory.
They determined to break up and go home; though for honour's sake all the cantons at the same time bound themselves to hasten with their united strength to the help of the one first attacked, the miserable dispersion of the confederacy was but miserably palliated by such impracticable stipulations.
The towns opened their gates when they saw the strange besieging machines, the towers rolling up to their walls; those who would not submit to the foreign masters sought a refuge beyond the sea in Britain.

Before we can reach any such conclusions, and in order to understand the Gothic cathedral, we must be familiar in general terms with the peculiar history of the city of Amiens and with some of its key personalities.
The earliest references to the city that was to become Amiens are found in the writings of Julius Caesar.' In the campaign against Gaul and Britain (60-51 B.C.),the Ambiani sided with the Bellovaci and the other Belgae against the Romans, furnishing a force estimated at ten thousand men.
The Bellovaci, the largest and most ferocious group, are said to have provided one hundred thousand.

Ninety-four of these were bought by the province of Limburg and are currently on display in the archaeological museum at Tongeren, which is 15 kilometers east of Heers.
The treasure contained coins from several ancient Belgian tribes: seventy-four were minted by the Eburones, seventeen by the Nervians, one by the Trevirans, one by the Bellovaci, and one by an unidentified ethnic group.
It is very tempting to connect this treasure with the insurrection of Ambiorix, the Eburonian leader who revolted against the Romans in the winter of 54/53 BCE, destroyed one of the legions of the Roman general Gaius Julius Caesar, and witnessed how his tribe was massacred by his enemies.

Wikinfo | Battle of the Sabis
In the year 57 BC, a large group of Belgic and Celtic tribes in the area of modern-day France and Belgium mobilized to drive out their Roman conquerors.
The union included the Bellovaci, Suessiones, Nervii, Atrebates, Ambriani, Morini, Menapii, Caleti, Veliocasses, Viromandui, Aduatuci, Condrusi, Eburones, Caeroesi, and Paemani tribes, and was under the leadership of Galba, king of the Suessiones.
Due to poor coordination of effort, the union collapsed in the face of quick military action by Caesar, and most tribes ceased hostilities.

M. Jullian decides for the former, because it was the natural route for the Bellovaci and the Suessiones, who furnished the strongest contingents to the confedelate army.
It is probable, therefore, that the point where the Belgae concentrated was not in the valley, but somewhere north of the Aisne - perhaps near La Fere on the Oise - and at a considerable distance from it (C.G., pp.
It has, indeed, been suggested that the various Belgic contingents dispersed at the very beginning of their flight, the Bellovaci and Suessiones moving down the valley on the heights parallel with the right bank of the river, and all the others towards Laon.
