 Bellybutton
The band's debut album, Bellybutton, was released in August of 1990 by Charisma Records to critical acclaim and cries of being blatant ripoff artists.
Andy later told Dave that the band (with Steve from Redd Kross on bass) was listening to this original version while they were recording "Bellybutton" and couldn't figure out why they couldn't get it to sound as good as the Dancing Dog version.
The CD long box (which I managed to keep) and, I believe, the cassette cover had a big photo of a (woman's?) bellybutton.

Both 1990's Bellybutton and 1993's Spilt Milk are perfect pop albums.
The album is a complex compendium of joyous bitterness, a stunning ride that envelops a dozen forms of popular music just on side one.
The most expensive album ever released by mini-label Charisma Records, Spilt Milk nearly bankrupted everyone involved, but one listen through and you know they all think it was worth it.

 YouthQuake magazine - Jellyfish
The end result was “Bellybutton,” a psychedelic romp through the late 1960s, from the foppish clothes worn by the band members on the album cover to the sing-along choruses.
“Spilt Milk” was an ambitious, innovative, almost apocalyptic album that tested the limits of pop music and, well, the human ear.
The song ends just as the album began: with a music box and the same note that started “Hush.” You’ve come full circle, but you feel as if you’ve been on the merry-go-round for 45 minutes, and it’s about to start again.

 TrouserPress.com :: Jellyfish
The disparity was unfortunate, because Bellybutton is a fine debut, a pleasant—occasionally wonderful ("The Man I Used to Be," "Now She Knows She's Wrong," the silky "Bedspring Kiss")—pastiche of pop icons from the Beatles to Squeeze via 10cc, the Beach Boys and Badfinger, all smoothly produced by Jack Joseph Puig and Albhy Galuten.
While the first Jellyfish album's eye-popping cover art and the band's absurdly whimsical wardrobe pushed the Summer of Love style, there's nothing remotely psychedelic about the music contained within.
The two had survived the failure of Beatnik Beatch (a forgettable pop-rock quartet whose one boring indie album—shorn of five tracks and bolstered by four better new songs for its retitled major-label reissue—makes halfbaked attempts at wit while managing to sound like a younger Supertramp) to reinvent themselves as Jellyfish.

 SongBook / Demolotion
Another project by Jellyfish alumni Roger Manning and Tim Smith, this album sounds more like the first Jellyfish album than 1992's Spilt Milk did, opting for Bellybutton's slightly trippy sound rather than the Queen-like melodic hard rock of Spilt Milk.
Though I'm not sure that these former Jellyfish members share Jason Falkner's ability to come up with a catchy song to go between all the catchy musical hooks, they do manage to sing out-of-this-world harmonies, making Demolotion quite a treat for those who thrive on vocal harmony.
Things kick off with a wonderfully (and strangely) harmonized number, Daphne's Disease.

SPILT MILK is still a power-pop album, but the Badfinger/Big Star elements are downplayed in favor of big, glammy Queen-like choruses and multilayered Electric Light Orchestra-styled production.

 Enon: High Society: Pitchfork Review
Luckily, High Society is just such an album, perhaps more varied and consistent than anything the defunct Daytonites ever released.
With preconceptions placing him far behind the starting line, it would take a pretty good album to force us writers to delete our pre-Enon Schmersal biographies and stop using lame 'rising like a phoenix from the ashes of Brainiac' intros.
While Schmersal is coming out like that creepy Levi's bellybutton commercial, the real clincher of High Society is Enon's newest member, Toko Yasuda, formerly one-half of The Lapse.

 Dolly Parton
Parton seems unlikely to rededicate herself to bluegrass, and this album is doubtless a minor event in her professional career.
Which I presume is how her first full-blown bluegrass album ended up on the indie label Sugar Hill: the Sugar Hill folks asked, and, anyway, bluegrass is as noncommercial as jazz these days.
(She is known backstage as the Iron Butterfly.) It is no accident that Parton was the star Shania Twain most wanted to meet after winning the CMA Entertainer of the Year award, inasmuch as three decades ago Parton's breasts blazed the trail Twain's bellybutton has followed.

 Naughty kitty! - Minnesota Daily
Kellin does add some slick, cheery and danceable hip hop beats, but the real reason a marginal-at-best singer like Taryn was able to snag a major label deal on DreamWorks Records was, of course, her pouty lips, flaunted chest and exposed bellybutton, which are plastered next to anything Boomkat related.
For instance, on Boomkat’s debut album “Boomkatalog One,” words like “go,” “for” and “on” become “goar-oh,” “faawrr” and “orawn.”
Included with the duo’s press release is a photo of Taryn on all fours, clad in a bikini top, cheek-bearing shorts and roller skates, being spanked by her brother with a playful “Ooo!” spread across her face.

They were such an amazing band, especially in concert judging by the 2 discs of live stuff - 1 from each of the Bellybutton and Spilt Milk-era tours in the box.
That Grays album is great, but a little schizophrenic, as you have 4 songwriters contributing to it.
Jellyfish's music is a huge exercise in derivative music and paying tribute to its heroes.

Jellyfish have been compared to powerpop bands such as Badfinger,The Raspberries,Cheap trick etc. but as anyone knows having listened to any of their records they are far superior to many of those bands as good as they were.
Jellyfish were undoubtedly one of the best bands in recent years and Andy Sturmer and Roger Manning were amazing songwriters.

 Bellybutton by Jellyfish CD
And so it went, when San Francisco's Jellyfish landed on the beach in 1990 with BELLYBUTTON, eliciting raves from pop-starved critics and enjoying an MTV hit with "The King Is Half-Undressed", but failing to reach the grunge-caked upper reaches of the US charts.
What a band, what an album, and what an impossible act to follow.
Musically the reference points might be late 60s/early 70s kitsch, but the songs echo classic Anglo pop such as the Kinks, the Who, and the similarly underappreciated 10cc.

In a pop scene ruled by boy bands and bellybutton babes born only a year or two after the Hawks first started, chances are slim that a simple, mature rock song can storm the Top 40.
Now, with their upbeat new album, Smile, the band is determined to fly up the commercial charts.
For years the Jayhawks have existed in a kind of limbo: They outgrew their status as local heroes but haven't taken the next step into the mainstream, as did Soul Asylum and, more recently, Semisonic.

These are heady times for Country Music Association's Entertainer of the Year, a Canadian-born sensation who rolled into Nashville and took the country music capital by storm with her skintight black leather pants, an exposed bellybutton, supermodel looks and a truckload of talent.
You're Still the One, the single from that album, won best country song for Twain and husband Robert John "Mutt" Lange and female country vocal performance for Twain at the Grammy Awards.
When the kids were old enough to set out on their own, Shania was free to pursue her dream of becoming a country music entertainer.

Jellyfish (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Drawing heavily from the Paisley Underground, Queen, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, XTC, Cheap Trick, Wings, and Badfinger, Jellyfish released their debut album Bellybutton in 1990.
After leaving Jellyfish, Jason Falkner joined with other disillusioned pop musicians Jon Brion, Buddy Judge and Dan McCarroll (the latter three best known for their work with Aimee Mann) in a band called The Grays.
San Francisco's short-lived power pop band Jellyfish was a project of drummer/singer/songwriter Andy Sturmer, keyboard player/multi-instrumentalist Roger Joseph Manning Jr., "Band Witchdoctor and Mime" Chris Manning (who has been credited as a bass player) and guitarist/bassist Jason Falkner.
