She says that security is given a high profile at Belmarsh and category A restrictions were applied to all prisoners, but managers and staff spent so little time in the company of prisoners that "dynamic security" was little developed.
Ms Owers says that the anti-terrorism detainees who were brought directly to Belmarsh from their homes, rather than via a police station, were initially refused a telephone call to legal representatives or family until their contacts had been cleared by the security department.

Last year, a former Belmarsh prison officer was awarded £28,000 compensation after he suffered racist abuse at the hands of fellow officers, including being urinated on by three colleagues and told he stank.

Despite evidence from psychiatrists commissioned by the Home Office itself, and despite the fact that G was to remain under conditions that amounted to house arrest, he claimed that the prisoner was merely 'presenting himself' as having mental health problems, and characterised the decision as 'bonkers'.
Belmarsh is a prison well known for the worst kinds of criminals and the government put me there.

When I got into Belmarsh, the standard procedure was, you know, they put me in the holding room, and then they took all my details, took all my belongings, wrote it down, I signed for them.
The time I got to Belmarsh was in the night, so at least I got to sleep; it took me some time to get to sleep, but then afterwards I got some sleep.
In Belmarsh, they have a unit called a CASS unit, that deals with people with psychiatric problems, so you get to see psychiatrists and there are some activities that you do there, but there’s nothing much.

His judgment is number 10622/02 and should be referred to in letters of complaint to Belmarsh, as should Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights (freedom of expression), which has been held by courts to refer to prisoners receiving publications.
