Belo said the layoffs, amounting to 3 percent of its total work force, were prompted by flat revenue since 2001 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where it also owns a television station.
Belo also announced last month that it would pay $23 million in cash, another $4 million on extra newsprint for make-good ads, and take a $26 million charge against earnings to compensate advertisers for the mistake.

Bishop Belo's courageous labours on behalf of the East Timorese and in pursuit of peace and reconciliation were internationally recognised when, along with José Ramos Horta, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in December 1996.
