Draw phylogenies of cichlids and their closest relatives lacking this jaw structure, and of the Beloniformes and their closest relatives lacking this jaw structure, that would support the hypothesis that this jaw structure is a key innovation.
For each phylogeny, use as many species is each group (cichlids, beloniforms, and their relatives) as is necessary to demonstrate whether or not the trait could be a key innovation.
It is hypothesized that the evolution of venom in snakes acted as a key innovation.

Needlefish - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
They closely resemble gars in being elongate and having long, narrow jaws filled with sharp teeth, and some species of needlefish are referred to as gars or garfish despite being only distantly related to the true gars.
Needlefish are in fact members of the Beloniformes and therefore most closely related to flying fish, sauries, and halfbeaks.
All needlefish feed primarily on smaller fishes, which they catch with a sideways sweep of the head.

 Neil Aschliman Virtual Poster
Beloniformes is a teleostean order comprising the needlefishes (Belonidae), sauries (Scomberesocidae), halfbeaks (Hemiramphidae), and flyingfishes (Exocoetidae).
A flyingfish (Parexocoetus) was used to root the ingroup analysis because of its strongly supported basal position within the Beloniformes (Lovejoy 2000).

Neil Aschliman Public Abstract   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-05)
The Beloniformes are an order of bony fishes including the needlefishes, sauries, halfbeaks, flyingfishes, and rice fishes.
The scientific classification of groups such as the Beloniformes may be determined by a detailed comparison of body form traits between species.
As sauries were not included in Dr. Ian Tibbetts' analysis of the pharynx, we extended his procedure to the two genera of sauries in order to resolve the relationships of the Beloniformes.

 Research Profile - Ian Tibbetts
The phylogenetic relationship among the Beloniformes (long tom, sauries, flying fish and garfish) has been a long-standing interest.
The functional morphological and developmental evidence I have compiled suggests that this group requires revision and that an evolutionary explanation of the relationships within this group is possible.

More recently I have been concentrating on the morphology of reproductive tissues using microscopical analysis (light and electron microscopy- TEM and SEM).
I have been carrying out these analyses principally on inseminating and/or viviparous species within the following orders: Cyprinodontiformes and Beloniformes (Atherinomorpha), and Characiformes and Siluriformes (Ostariophysi).
The data thus far have revealed a tremendous diversity in the adaptations correlated with these fascinating reproductive habits.
