Belton House is a beautiful classic restoration masterpiece built between 1685 and 1688 for Sir John Brownlow, the 3rd Baron of Great Humby.
The author Edith Wharton was so taken by Belton House that she had a miniature version of it built in Massachusetts.
Belton has been used as a setting for many television series and dramas including 'Pride and Prejudice', 'Tom Jones', 'The Buccaneers' and 'Bleak House'.

Belton has been described as a compilation of all that is finest of Carolean architecture, the only truly vernacular style of architecture that England had produced since the time of the Tudors.
Belton is built of the local Ancaster stone, with a lighter ashlar from Ketton for the quoining.
The cupola at Belton does not light a lofty domed hall, as is often the case in Europe, but houses a staircase which gives access to a large viewing platform on top of a lead roof, concealed from the ground by the balustrade which tops the more conventional and visible hipped roof.

A painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds of Sir John Cust, Speaker of the House of Commons from 1761 - 1770, is hung in the splendid marble hall.
The 17th century saloon in the centre of the house is panelled and decorated with intricate limewood carving of the Grinling Gibbons school.
The small Palladian temple that faces down a canal on the east of the garden and the unrestored wilderness to the west are remnants of the 18th century layout.

Belton House in Lincolnshire is a place that I visited some years ago on a school trip and have only just recently revisited.
Belton House itself was built between 1684 and 1688.
Be warned though that when you exit the house you actually come out at a different place to where you began the tour and if, like me, someone is waiting for you it might be a good idea to let them know this so that you don't lose them.

In the 19th century Belton enjoyed a second golden age under the charismatic 3rd Earl Brownlow, who had both house and garden restored to their Charles II splendour.
The one on the left with its fluid depictions of mallard and pheasant is attributed to Grinling Gibbons.
The gardens are on the north side of the house and are largely the creation of the 1st and 3rd Earls in the early and late 19th century.

Belton House was taken over by the BBC last week to film a new version of Charlotte Bronte's classic Jane Eyre.
Belton House has been used for television shows including Bargain Hunt, Treasure Hunt, Moondial and also featured as Rosings in the 1995 BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.
Although Belton House has its own red room, opened in March 2004 after two years of restoration work, the red room where Mrs Reed locks Jane is actually being created at Sudbury Hall while Belton's red room is transformed into the grand salon at Gateshead.
