Belur Math is a religious abbey located in the neighbourhood of Belur in the city of Howrah, West Bengal, India.
The original monastery at Baranagar known as Baranagar Math was shifted in January 1899 to a newly acquired plot of land at Belur in Howrah district.
Belur Math, serves as the Mother House for all the monks of Ramakrishna Order who live in the various branch centres of Ramakrishna Math and/or Ramakrishna Mission in different parts of India and the world.

The Math was run by the Brahmacharinis for some years successfully under the guidance of the Trustees of the Belur Math.
On the 26th August, 1959, Sri Sarada Math was given independent status and the Sannyasinis became its Trustees by virtue of a Deed of Trust executed by the President of the Ramakrishna Math.
On the 13th May, 1960, the Trustees of Sri Sarada Math, acting on the advice of the authorities of the Belur Math, founded the Ramakrishna Sarada Mission Association with the object of carrying on educational, cultural, charitable and similar activities among women and children, looking upon them as veritable manifestations of the Divine.

That building was handed over to the Belur Math in 1974 by a private body called the Ramakrishna Math, Begumpet, which lies to the north of the present Rajiv Gandhi Airport of Hyderabad.
That Math at Begumpet was built in 1922 by one Swami Yogeshwaranandaji, a disciple of Sri Ramachandra Datta who was a householder disciple of Sri Ramakrishna.
The Ramakrishna Math at Begumpet and the Ramakrishna -Vivekaranda Samiti on the Market Street, Secunderabad, run by another group of devotees, were amalgamated into one institution at the instance of the late Swami Yatiswaranandaji Maharaj, who had visited Hyderabad earlier and stayed in the Begumpet Math.

The result of this was the formation of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, centred at Belur Math in West Bengal, India, and later of the Sri Sarada Math and Ramakrishna Sarada Mission centred at Dakshineswar, in Calcutta, India.
Swamiji's original vision was to establish a Math (monastic centre) for women first and one for men later, as he believed that a bird can not fly on only one wing.
The Math and the Mission are engaged in charitable and philanthropic activities: the former lays emphasis on spiritual development of people and the latter gives priority to welfare work.

The Math and the Mission are closely related, for the Governing Body of the Mission is made up of the Trustees of the Math and the administrative work of the Mission is mostly in the hands of the monks of the Math.
Though the origin of both the Math and the Mission can be traced back to the days of Baranagore monastery, the Math was registered as a trust only in 1901, and the Mission, a registered society, in 1909, twelve years after it had been started by Swami Vivekananda on 1st May 1897.
