Biological and Sociocultural Views and Consequences of Gender Stereotyping
This view holds that our sex roles are solely the product of the society in which we live, and that their incompatibility with the reality of individual personalities causes pain and stress for many people, as do other forms of oppression and stereotyping.
If substantial sex role similarities are found between animals and humans, or if infants are in fact found to exhibit traits traditionally assigned to their gender, this could point toward the fact that such abilities and roles are biologically determined.
Furthermore, both these dichotomized sex roles are damaging to society as a whole because they promote violent behavior in men, against both each other and women, discourage individuals from pursuing certain activities in which they might excel given the chance, and foster the communication gap between the sexes.

Bem explains that the entire cultural debate of gender must be reconstructed to reflect the needs of females that have been overlooked for centuries or veiled in so-called "equal" measures.
Bem contends that while this may be true, of course men and women are biologically different, advocates of this view look at biological data out of context, drawing incorrect conclusions and furthering wild speculation about such things as brain differences between the sexes.
Bem asserts that not all societies separate their members into only two genders, but that in the United States anything other than male or female is problematic.

The Measurement of Psychological Androgyny Sandra L Bem (1974)
Bem would demonstrate that androgyny is more prevalent than it really is. Bem did find from her normative data (see below), that although social desirability (as determined from her 'neutral' items) correlated with masculinity and femininity, it did not correlate with androgyny.
Bem has built into her scale a check to see whether it is likely the subject is simply trying to give a favourable impression of themselves.
Bem would have had to wait to see whether all of her androgynous people were successful in life.

The hypothesis was that there would be an overlap between the roles and their expectations and that there would be greater differences than similarities in the perceived role expectations.
The hypotheses were that the sex of the participant would not have an effect on characteristic ratings, the sex of the target would have an effect on characteristic ratings, and the label of the target will have an effect on characteristic ratings.
For feminine participants, the sex of the participant, the sex of the target, and the label of the target was not expected to have an effect on characteristic ratings.

 Psyc Self Perception
The Bem Sex Role Inventory was administered to determine subjects' self-perceptions according to gender role stereotypes.
The same questions based on family- versus self-oriented values were answered for (1) self-description; (2) subject's perception of the values held by the ideal man; and (3) subject's perception of the values women associate with the ideal man. Subjects were first compared on the basis of their own personal values.

Masculinity pertains to societies in which social gender roles are clearly distinct: men are supposed to be assertive and tough and women are supposed to be modest and tender (Hofstede and Vunderink,1994).
To examine culture and gender differences in the new sex role scales (relationship orientation/femininity and instrumentalism/masculinity), and in the emotional lability scale, we ran a multivariate analysis of covariance.

PERCEPTION OF GENDER IN TEXT: DO READERS ASSIGN GENDER TO ANDROGYNOUS CHARACTERS IN READINGS?
The BEM Sex Role Inventory was used as the method for the participant to establish the gender of the character by having participants rate the character according to masculine and feminine characteristics listed.
The gender of the character is the dependent variable in this study whereas the sex of the participant, name of the character and pronoun used, and BEM Sex Role Inventory score of that character is the independent variable.
In addition, the BEM Sex Role Inventory may not be as accurate as it has been in the past because of today’s change in sex roles.

Gender role orientation of the readers from five of the publishers was found to be masculine for male characters and androgynous for female characters.
Research has shown that an androgynous gender role orientation is a factor in the self esteem and achievement of children and adolescents (Alpert-Gillis and Connell, 1989; Sedney, 1987; Bem, 1981).

Aside from the slight imbalance in the sex ratio, the distribution of demographic characteristics (age, occupation, and education) did not differ significantly from that observed in contemporaneous samples obtained in the Sydney metropolitan area (Sydney is Australia's largest city and accounts for 3 million of the state's 5 million people).

Masculine and feminine roles are not opposite ends of the same continuum but are instead two separate dimensions.
We use the terms "traditional" and "conservative" to describe the belief that men's and women's roles are distinct, and the terms "modern" and "liberal" to describe the belief that roles are not ascribed according to sex.
A modern, or liberal, view of gender roles is that both men and women may engage in behaviors that have traditionally been ascribed to either sex (Blee & Tickamyer, 1995).

Gender Role and ISO In an ever-changing society with complex values, it is difficult to determine whether perceptions regarding such traditional ideals as gender roles have changed and what effect such change can have on interpersonal interactions.
This is because certain gender roles are traditionally encouraged in individuals of the traditionally-related sex, and though it may be possible to break from them to a certain extent complete reversal is, at best, uncommon.
The gender role for each participant and his or her ISO were determined using a modified version of the recommended procedure in the BSRI.

In the nearly three decades since the BSRI was developed, women's and men's roles in American society have changed in a variety of ways.
Furthermore, in many movies and television programs, women and men are found in a wider variety of positions and roles, display a greater repertoire of behavioral traits, and appear to experience a wider range of emotions.
Remnants of traditional gender role expectations for women and men remain a part of the cultural fabric, but many societal changes have occurred for women and men since the time of the original development of the BSRI.

Hershey examines the reported differences between men's and women's political attitudes, hypothesizing that measures of sex role orientations are better predictors of political interests and attitudes than sex.
The author first explores the process of sex role socialization and its relevance to political attitudes, then tests the relationship between sex role identities and individual attitudes toward several issues.
Utilizing the Bem Sex Role Inventory for measuring the sex role identities of a random sample of 107 Indiana University undergraduates, Hershey discovered clear differences in political attitudes between the men and women in her survey.

In addition, all participants completed the Bem Sex-role Inventory (Bem, 1974; BSRI), as a criterion measure of M and F, and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability scale (Crowne and Marlowe, 1960), to assess the role of a social desirability set.
Validity for these scales was inferred from: 1) the relation of these scales to the BSRI M and F scales, 2) the high Alpha coefficients obtained, and 3) the interaction reflecting the differential effects of cueing and sex on the scales.
Thus, it was concluded that scales based on animal stimuli can be useful in the assessment of gender with minimal social desirability and reflect a broader concept of gender.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MALES` ROLE IN BIRTH CONTROL AND THEIR VIEWS ON NONTRADITIONAL GENDER ROLES
The difficulty of changing established gender roles is the fear that the man might be compared to a homosexual (Williams, 1993).
Some of these stereotypes are that it interrupts sexual pleasure, and that the male has planned sex for the night instead of it being spontaneous because he is prepared by having a condom in his wallet.
The Bem Sex-Role Inventory was a good tool in providing information of the participant’s nontraditional views but some of the items could have caused confusions for participants that did not speak English as a first language.

Gender role orientation of five of the publishers was found to be masculine for male characters and androgynous for female characters.
Results of this study indicate that while female characters in basal readers, as written, possess a balance of masculine and feminine traits and are classified as androgynous, male characters possess primarily masculine traits and almost exclusively engage in traditional masculine behaviors.
Individuals seeking to use basal readers which are androgynous will find that androgyny is a viable gender role orientation for female characters, but not for males.
