GEORGE HERBERT - LoveToKnow Article on GEORGE HERBERT   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
In f 630 Charles I., at the instance of the earl of Pembroke, whose kinsman Herbert was, presented him to the living of Fugglestone with Bemerton, near Salisbury, and he was ordained priest in September.
The story of the poets life at Bemerton, as told by Walton, is one of the most exquisite pictures in literary biography.
Nothing in his own church at Bemerton was too commonplace to serve as a starting-point for the epigrammatic expression of his piety.

Enchiridion: George Herbert and the Church of St Andrew, Bemerton
The Church of St. Andrew, Bemerton -- George Herbert's Church - is in the parish of "Fugglestone-cum-Bemerton-Capella".
Sidney Herbert was the chief purchaser; thus adding the greatest part of Bemerton and Quidhampton to the Pembroke Estates; the above-mentioned portion of Bemerton having devolved to the family of Pembroke in the sequestration of the Abbey of Wilton in 1535.
But though the Abbey of Wilton did not possess Bemerton, it did possess the patronage of the Living of Fugglestone, and subsequently of Fugglestone-cum-Bemerton Capella, the Capella or Chapel being the Church of which we are speaking.

Pitchside.net //// Priory smash four past Bemerton in convincing Vase win
The amount of positive attributes to Christchurch’s emphatic 4-0 FA Vase win over Bemerton Heath Harlequins at Hurn Bridge was a huge boost to a club that have been threatening a performance like this for some time.
Bemerton came at Christchurch a touch but never really threatened Frampton’s goal at any stage of the contest.
And on a day of major pluses for the Hurn Bridge outfit, with 14 minutes left on the clock 17 year old Steve Bernard sprung from the substitutes bench to show his lightning pace and was another aspect of this excellent victory.

However, as has happened on a number of occasions this season, Lymington and New Milton allowed their opponents to get back into the match, although it was still against the run of play when Bemerton equalised on 37 minutes with a headed goal from a cross that the visiting defence should have cleared.
With honours now even, both sides seemed to be settling for a draw, although a number of chances came and went at each end but with both sides seeming to lack a cutting edge.

Bemerton were content on catching Thatcham on the break and they nearly went ahead when Jamie Green cleared off his own goal line.
