Ben Cruachan is a 1126 m mountain that is the highest point in Argyll and Bute, Scotland.
It is the high point of a ring of mountains, known as the Cruachan Horseshoe, that surrounds the power station reservoir.
Additionally the upper reservoir receives rainwater; tunnels have been built through Ben Cruachan to catch rain coming from all sides of the mountain.

Ben Cruachan is a long rocky ridge running mainly E-W but with many minor ridges on both the Glen Noe side and the Loch Awe side.
Routes ascend Meall Cuanail, due S of Ben Cruachan or from the resevoir to the bealach between Ben Cruachan an Meall Cuanail.
Ben Cruachan is an excellent mountain with a craggy summit, but no scrambling is required.

Ben Cruachan is the closest munro to Oban and it is well worth the effort to climb because on a clear day, which because of it’s proximity to the coast is more likely than some of the inland hills, it has great views looking west over Oban and out to Mull beyond.
The group of hills actually consists of 4 munros of which 2, Ben Cruachan (meaning Conical hill) and Stob Diamb (peak of the stag) will be ticked off as part of this route.
Ben Cruachan is also an unusual hill because it is used for hydro-electric power production, nothing unusual there but the turbines are located in a man-made cavern several hundred metres under the mountainside.

The area I call the Cruachan Group of mountains is located on the west coast of Scotland.
However it is possible to climb Stob Diamh and Ben Cruachan together starting on the A85 near the Cruachan Power Station at the Pass of Brander.
For the energetic and keen walker the single Corbett Beinn a'Bhuiridh can be included in the round of Stob Diamh and Ben Cruachan but if you are including all the Munro Tops it makes for a long day.

A mountain of Argyll and Bute, Ben Cruachan rises to a height of 1126m (3694 feet) 4 miles (6 km) east of Bonawe, between Loch Etive and Loch Awe.
The name Ben Cruachan is derived from the Gaelic for "stacky hill".
Within the mountain a hydro-electric power station pumps water from Loch Awe to the Cruachan Reservoir, which is enclosed in the southern corrie.

Ben Cruachan, one of the best known of the Scottish 1,000 metre (3,281 feet) mountains, has a rugged spine of several peaks running from east to west.
It lies to the north of the picturesque village of Lochawe which, in Victorian times, was the principal point of embarkation for visitors to the many luxurious mansions built around Loch Awe by the rich sporting gentry who spent the "season" hunting and fishing with their families and friends.
Cross the road and walk the 2.9mile/4.6km private road westwards and uphill to the dam of the Cruachan Reservoir at 1,312 feet/400m.

The reference to the Ben Voirlich in which Emma Soul and her family migrated to Australia in 1880 (Sole Co-ordinator’s Report, Soul Search, March 2000) was of interest to me as my grandfather sailed as a member of her crew a few years later.
The Ben Voirlich and her sister ship the Ben Cruachan were built as emigrant ships by Barclay Curle in 1873 for Watson Brothers of Glasgow.
The master of the Ben Voirlich from 1879 to 1884 was Charles Douglas.

A classic pyramidal peak with four radiating ridges, Ben Cruachan dominates the area between Loch Awe and Loch Etive and the road from Tyndrum to Oban.
The superb ridge of the Ben Cruachan massif gives a choice of traditional horseshoe routes, and this route completes a circuit around the damned south corrie containing the Cruachan Reservoir.
The path here is less distinct as it negotiates the boulder strewn ridge on the climb up to the summit of Ben Cruachan and the OS trig point.

Before setting out to Cruachan it is worth reading Chapter 2 of JHB Bell's 'Progress in Mountaineering' in which he describes a winter ascent on 3rd January 1936 of the north ridge of Stob Dearg at the western end of the mountain.
Another rewarding ascent at this grade can be had on the north ridge of Drochaid Ghlas (3312ft, 1009m), the central summit of Ben Cruachan.
Use the Falls of Cruachan start if you must but it is a far finer mountaineering experience when undertaken from the eastern or western ends, away from the 'crowds', and out of sight of the dam and all things electric, telephone, mobile and the rest.
