Occasionally, Elton’s well-developed sense of irony swoops in to save such things from the mundane, but just as often he’s not telling you much that’s new and it’s, well, boring, frankly.
Yet for all this show’s faults, it would be unfair to dismiss Elton as a has-been, trading on his celebrity to peddle only bland, generic material.
But then Ben’s a busy man – what with Blessed now on BBC One and his World War One thriller The First Casualty recently published, just in time for Armistice Day – so perhaps he hasn’t given himself the luxury of rehearsing this show, and of being more ruthless with mediocre material.
