An Analysis of Ben Hamper and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Ben Hamper's family history was one that was very similar to his own life.
Hamper as a father was not exactly a model for all other fathers to come after him.
Hamper's deviance hurt him financially and emotionally, because even though he could go out and "relax" for awhile when he was doubling up, he always ran the risk of getting caught.

When Ben Hamper was growing up as a high school student, he dreaded the fact that he would probably become a factory worker for General Motors.
Ben Harper went in for the job, took a urine sample, donated some of his to a soon to be co-worker, and began to work on the line.
His new co-worker and Ben became very irritated by the monotony of the work, but Hamper got by with the knowledge that he was making good money, and a few drinks during his lunch break.

Ben Hamper's "Rivethead" is overflowing with gloriously profane, rip-snortin,' gut-level real-time prose wound up tight and sprung from the intense, hellish grind of monotonous, repetitive labor.
Ben Hamper is as sharp as they come on this account, and it doesn't surprise me that his writing career began stringing for Michael Moore's underground lefty-rag, The Flint Voice, covering wrestling matches and rock concerts.
Hamper tag-teams writing from the heart and gut, and his observations are etched in acid.

Hamper, a son, a grandson, and a great-grandson of General Motors' "shoprats," chronicles ten years spent in an abusive marriage with GM in Flint, Michigan.
Hamper copes with his perceived limited options by consuming impressive quantities of alcohol and writing an irreverent, cynically humorous column about shoprat life for an alternative newspaper.
How much of Hamper's alienation and later panic disorder are the result of his ten years at GM and how much are due to genetics and choices is unexplored.

Well, you guessed it, Ben Hamper's prediction proved wrong and he spent ten years in the 70's and 80's on a General Motors assembly line in Flint, MI--a "shoprat" like his father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
That, of course, was not Hamper's purpose in writing the book; he wanted to demonstrate that GM was a shop of horrors.
And it must be said that the book is so funny and he is such a perceptive critic of the bureaucratic mess that the auto industry had become, that he nearly succeeds in winning our sympathy.

"Weasels," Hamper called them: "ant-heads in smocks and bifocals," "techno-cretins" whose annual state-of-the-factory presentations were "one long lullaby of foreign terminology, slides, numerology, and assorted high-tech masturbation." Perhaps the one best estimation, then, of Frederick Taylor's impact is to say that without him we would have no ant-heads and no Hampers.
