Early Ben Webster sounds a lot like Coleman Hawkins, but after joining Ellington, Webster came under the influence of Johnny Hodges and his style mellowed.
Webster retained some of the Hawkins'inspired brusqueness and bluster, but combined it with a dose of Hodges' lyricism.
Even though Webster spent only a few years with Ellington, he influenced the Ellington band permanently because the tenor players who came later, specifically Paul Gonsalves and Harold Ashby, developed styles that were much indebted to Webster.

While he is a stellar guitar player and a singer of considerable promise, young Ben Harper has yet to pay the kind of dues required to convey the soul-stirring resonance of a Ted Hawkins.
Ben Harper pays homage to those traditions while inventing others we've never heard before.
Then along comes Ben Harper, a much younger man with an equally obsessive need to tell stories radio rarely allows.

Flowing all around the percussion is the synth and bass interplay of Cameron Hawkins and violin and mandolin of Ben Mink who get into some amazing playing.
It's fun to try and pick out which sound is being generated by Ben Mink's violin or Cameron Hawkins' synths.
Hawkins also doubles on bass guitar and hardly-there vocals (which are nice but seem like somewhat of an afterthought), while Mink also generates some unusual sounds with his 5-sting mandolin.

 Coleman Hawkins - Verve Records
Despite Hawkins’s sympathy toward young, exploratory musicians, some of his most successful recordings of the 1960s were encounters with his Swing-Era peers, such as tenor saxophonist Ben Webster, who had long emulated Hawkins’s big and breathy sound, alto saxophonist Benny Carter, and Duke Ellington.
Coleman Hawkins (1904–69) was born in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Despite its abstraction, it clicked with the public and Hawkins was required to play it for the rest of his career.

 Ben Webster b
From his early work with Ellington, through the small group sides of the '40s, a remarkable set of ballad duets with Hawkins, to his late work in Europe, Webster's recorded legacy is irrefutable evidence that he was a true giant of jazz.
A consummate performer at any tempo, Webster's fast blues were powerful and exciting displays of the extrovert side of his nature, yet he was at his best with slow, languorous ballads, which he played with deeply introspective feeling and an often astonishing sensuality.
Although he was with the band for only three years, he had enormous influence upon it, both through his presence, which galvanized his section-mates, and by his legacy.

Their playing in support of Webster was incredibly sympathetic, with Peterson having the sense to reduce the quantity of notes he typically would put into his solos (with the exception of his snappy solo on "Late Date").

For a half century, Ben Webster, one of the "big three" of swing tenors—along with Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young—was one of the best-known and most popular saxophonists.
Early in his career, Webster worked with many of the greatest orchestras of the time, including those led by Willie Bryant, Cab Calloway, Benny Carter, Fletcher Henderson, Andy Kirk, Bennie Moten, and Teddy Wilson.
Exhaustively researched, this is a much needed and long overdue study of the life and music of one of jazz's most important artists.
