Ben-Hur (1925 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ben Hur was a 1925 silent film directed by Fred Niblo.
A total of 60,960 m (200,000 feet) of film was shot for the chariot race scene which was eventually edited down to 229 m (750 feet).
Current prints of the 1925 version are of the Turner-supervised restoration, replete with the color tints and Technicolor sections to resemble the original theatrical release, but with the addition of a newly recorded stereo orchestral soundtrack by Carl Davis which was originally recorded for a Thames Television screening of the movie.

THE CINEMA LASER DVD REVIEW-- BEN-HUR
BEN-HUR was filmed in MGM Camera 65, which remains the biggest and widest of all wide screen processes that deployed a single strip of film.
The film element used for the transfer is in great shape, only displaying minor blemishes and an occasional tinge of grain.
The bass channel is quite potent for a film of this vintage; this lends credibility to the hoof beats during the chariot race, as well creating an earthshaking rumble during the film's climatic crucifixion sequence.

That the film has established an enduring and widely celebrated place in the pantheon of important American films is an understatement of basic misrecognition.
On-screen through most of the film Charlton Heston's reputation in Hollywood was secured with this performance in which he was stripped to little more than a loin cloth in certain key moments just as he was meant to demonstrate the dual physical and spiritual transformations implicit in the part.
Namely, the film of each year with the best cinematography, production design, special effects and direction that comes from a recognized source and is peopled by contemporary stars can't help but be the best movie of the year.

Rozsa was brought onto the film from the very beginning and the project involved a year and a half of his life.
The first appearance of the theme in the film occurs as Ben-Hur, part of a group of convicts being dragged across the desert in chains, is given water by a young carpenter in Nazareth.
Considered by many to be one of the finest film scores of all time, the score would have been unbeatable in almost any year but match it with the film's juggernaut and you have an instant winner.

In addition, the film has some unevenness of tone, for director Fred Niblo lacked the strong personal imprint to bring the film totally into line, and some sequences were supervised by second-unit assistants.
But as the scope of the story grows more intimate, so does her acting (and you realize in retrospect that her expansive emoting early in the film was exactly right, as was Novarro's: it fit the breadth of the initial episodes).
The dramatic climaxes of the film are heightened by music of thundering intensity that leaves your speakers begging for mercy, while the underplayed, poignant sequences are cushioned by sensitive playing of strings and woodwinds.

Wyler’s writers eliminate Iras altogether; in the 1925 version she is no longer Balthasar’s daughter but a whore plain and simple, a known consort of Messala, who uses “The Egyptian” to spy on Ben-Hur and possibly, by way of seduction, to sap his manly essence on the eve of the race.
Filmed on one of the production’s most beautiful interior sets (featuring a luxuriously appointed room in the Hur domicile lined with unusually patterned shutters opened and closed against an evening sky), the two of them nuzzle convincingly, but it’s in a more sober context that Heston shines.
Rozsa, born in Hungary in 1907, was one of the few film composers rising from the 1930s not to write under the overwhelming influence of the Germanic and Viennese-flavored scorings of the émigré pioneers, Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Max Steiner, who had based their tonal language on Wagner, Mahler, and Richard Strauss.

Surprisingly, perhaps, because a lot of people today tend to look upon the era of silent film as some kind of Stone Age, the earlier version is actually just as large scale as the newer one, maybe even larger, with a cast that was claimed to number some 125,000.
As usual in a silent film, the acting appears more stilted and exaggerated than we countenance today, a convention partly carried over from the stage and partly used to communicate effectively in a silent medium.
Rear-channel reproduction is limited mainly to musical ambiance for the first three-quarters of the film, but then in the climactic crucifixion scene, the rears come to life in noises of wind and storm.

Charlton Heston brings a muscular physical and moral presence to the role of Judah Ben-Hur, a Jewish nobleman in Palestine whose heroic odyssey includes enslavement by the Romans, a bold escape from an embattled slave galley, vengeance against his tormentors during a furious arena chariot race and fateful encounters with Jesus Christ.
However, their happy reunion soon goes sour when Judah learns of the poor way that Messala tends to treat his people, and not long after that, Ben-Hur and his family are severely punished for an accident that vaguely threatened a Roman governor.
A modicum of dialogue also came from the side speakers, though this effect was limited; very little speech emanated directly from one channel or the other, and most sounded as though it appeared in a mid-zone between speakers.
