I think Ben was rude to make a remark like that which was being presented on screen in front of all - we all have to choose are words but then again she over reacted and contradicted herself so both looked silly.
Ben’s argument appears to be that Mena wasn’t particularly showing respect towards the character of her audience.
For her to comment on and respond to Ben’s remarks are one thing (although civility in her response would have gone much further towards furthering her call for civility from others).

The concensus seems to be that Trott lost it, and Metcalf was cool under fire, especially considering that he was unexpectedly told to stand up during this conference.
Ben was probably commenting in the IRC facility from the begining until the end of the conference… and getting confronted on his opinions in that context.
That being said, Mena basically called Metcalfe an asshole from the stage, which is fraught with “context” (the authority figure being before the audience on an elevated platform), which is substantially different from Metcalfe’s comment which was directed at the content of her presentation, not a pejorative directed at the speaker herself.

Considering the change in his willingness to be a jerk to Mena once the format swiftly switched from (publicly readable) IRC to a ‘real life’ conversation, at least we can credit him with consistency.

Ben is hinting at a serendipitous discovery of the bottom-up nature of web 2.0 apps, and how they can wend their way into the enterprise, a project, or a team at a time.
Enterprises would be better off if their IT departments could move to small, low cost, web-based apps that satisfy local needs -- a project group, one campus in Denver, the marketing department in Japan -- without having to subordinate local needs to corporate controls.
