Bio: Trumpeter Ben Neill successfully bridged the gap between ambient music and the avant-garde, further blurring aesthetic boundaries with the development of his mutantrumpet, a revolutionary electro-acoustic hybrid of conventional trumpet and synthesized sound.
A year later Neill travelled to Amsterdam's Steim Studios to develop a new, MIDI-capable mutantrumpet; the upgrade resulted in the addition of a number of switches, knobs and pressure-sensitive pads allowing the player to trigger and modify a variety of sounds and sequences, as well as lights and projections, all in real time.
Neill then began a six-year stint as curator of the downtown NYC performance space The Kitchen, a position which served as his gateway into the burgeoning electronic music scene.

Art in America: Ben Neill at Paula Cooper - New York, New York - Review of Exhibitions
Ben Neill's new interactive installation/performance, Green Machine, was an oddly nostalgic work, a throwback to the psychedelic light shows of the late 1960s and early '70s that provided the backdrop for rock concerts.
While Neill had other antecedents in mind - the "chillout" rooms in contemporary music clubs - there was something quite historicist about this piece, as revealed in the sensual, even bacchanalian combination of sound and imagery and in the optimistic evocation of a beneficent, self-renewing natural paradise.
Neill's musical tones congealed into rich patterns mixed with simulations of birdcalls, crickets and other natural noises, all of which matched the lush wildernesses depicted on the wall.

Ben Neill: Goldbug: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Ben Neill plays a modified trumpet on top of breakbeat and jungle rhythms, so it's questionable why his music is consistently shelved in the jazz section of most record stores.
Like Neill's previous albums, you get plenty of horn action, but this time around, the underlying music is much more solid and far less distracting than usual.
But he does, resulting in a genre that is distinctly his own-- a sound that you could play during breakfast on Saturday morning or later in the evening at a funky throwdown.

Ben Neill is a classically trained composer who has worked with the likes of avant-gardist John Cage as well as DJs Spooky and Olive (whose vinyl mixing appears here).
He garnishes his soundscapes with the blaring calm of his own invention, the "mutantrumpet." Although it looks like a traditional trumpet with extra bells and valves, Neill's computer manipulates its signals to create a refreshing fusion of future and past, man and machine.
This album showcases his invention almost too much, but Neill makes up for tooting his own horn with exceptional transitions from minimal rhythms to striated electronic epiphanies (particularly on "Dream Phase"), and on "Propeller" with skilled drums-and-bass futurism.
