 Ben-Hur (1925)
Years in the making, with filming in Italy and California, and changes of script and leading man, BEN HUR could have been a disaster.
He was a very fine actor and is excellent as Ben Hur.
This film should not be compared with the Heston remake; it stands completely on its own merits.

or further information on the production of Ben-Hur see Kevin Brownlow, "The Heroic Fiasco: Ben-Hur," The Parade's Gone By, pages 385-413; Bosley Crowther, "The Saga of Ben Hur" in The Lion's Share, pages 91-100; A. The film was an enormous popular success following its premiere in New York on December 30, 1925, and played in roadshow engagements until its general release in the fall of 1927.
The trouble-plagued filming became a disaster, as costs spiraled out of control and the filming of the sea battle led to the death of several extras who could not swim.

Why "Ben-Hur" is My Favorite Movie
Sciabarra received a number of emails from Objectivists, who are atheists, asking him to explain his choice of "Ben-Hur"--a film with a religious theme--as his favorite movie of all time.
The film tells the story of a wealthy Jew, Prince Judah Ben-Hur, who is reunited with his boyhood friend, Messala (played by Stephen Boyd), who saved Ben-Hur's life when they were boys.
The film is indeed bracketed by two divine events: the first scenes concern the Adoration of the Magi and the final scenes take place in the shadow of Christ's Cross, as we witness shepherds tending to their flock.

 Ben-Hur
Christ's pivotal scenes in the film are shot in technicolor, a surely startling revelation in 1925, but we never see His face.
After catastrophic incidents, including the deaths of extras during the filming of the sea battle, the studio quickly moved the entire production back to California, where Novarro was given the lead role and Niblo took over the director's chair.
In fact, because most audiences have never seen this version (probably because it's a silent film and not readily accessible), the film is one of the more overlooked gems of the 1920s.

New York State Writers Institute - Ben Hur Film Notes
BEN-HUR opened in late 1925 to tepid reviews and a torrid box-office.
But this was not the prestige production that the brand-new Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer movie combine had in mind to announce itself as a major producer in 1925.
(One of the thousands of extras was a bewildered William Wyler, who would direct the 1959 remake of the film.) Shooting continued for weeks, until Eason, heedless of danger, had gotten exactly the detail shots he wanted to make the chariot race one of the most exciting action sequences ever filmed.

 Ben-Hur (1959)
There are contradictory reports about the fatality of a stuntman during the dangerous scene in the film, yet no published discussions of the film mention the accident, and Charlton Heston's 1995 autobiography In the Arena specifically stated that no one was seriously injured during the filming of the scene.
With descriptive review commentaries and background history on many classic, landmark films in cinematic history, especially American/Hollywood films.
It was nominated for twelve Academy Awards, Best Picture, Best Actor (Charlton Heston - his sole career Oscar), Best Supporting Actor (Hugh Griffith), Best Director (William Wyler), Best Color Cinematography, Best Color Art Direction/Set Decoration, Best Sound, Best Score, Best Film Editing, Best Color Costume Design, Best Special Effects, and Best Screenplay.

 REELINSIDER.COM - BEN - HUR (1959)
Without question MGM's $15 million dollar 1959 update of their own 1925 masterwork, Ben-Hur, was one of the biggest gambles in movie history.
Though the movie undoubtedly springs from this Roman preoccupation with destroying Jesus, Ben-Hur's world turning upside down is what gives the movie its motion.
Without him, then, there's no reason for audiences to identify with the film and without the lure of this kind of identification there would be no through-line to enjoy what's happening unless spectators are willing to ignore the purpose of feature films and endure a 212-minute long sermon.

Ben Hur (Heston) avoids Messala and makes another chariot crash into the wall, dumping the driver.
Filmed at Livorno, Italy, it used hundreds of local extras, many of whom apparently lied about being able to swim.
It is recommended that before claiming that a particular stunt had to have been real, you obtain a video of the film and go through the stunt in slow motion.

 pledgesalute
What Winkler fails to realize is that every film he cites was produced after 1892 and thus after the widespread use of the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. flag, and it’s original straight-arm salute.
The salute was then used in famous films in the early 1900's, often in fictitious "Roman" scenes, and including a film that involved D'Annunzio entitled "Cabiria" and written of elsewhere.
According to Dr. Martin Winkler in "The Roman Salute on Film" of the American Philological Association, the salute is not in any Roman art or text.

 Biography for Myrna Loy
When the film finished, there was instantaneous rapturous applause and Huston then said, "Here from her apartment in New York is Miss Loy.
She resumed movie acting full-time in 1946, as popular as ever, and starred in some major movie hits, but by the 1950s she was more involved in politics than in acting, and worked only sporadically from that time on.
She was popular enough that, in 1936, she was named Queen of the Movies and Clark Gable the king in a nationwide poll of movie goers.

 Amazon.com: DVD: Ben-Hur (1959)
BUT be careful if you're watching the DVD's featurette on the Making Of...they show a scene in the 1925 Ben-Hur movie of TOPLESS WOMEN.
But it's not just running time or a cast of thousands that makes an epic, it's the subject matter, and here the subject--Prince Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston) and his estrangement from old Roman pal Messala (Stephen Boyd)--is rich, detailed, and sensitively handled.
Director William Wyler, who had been a junior assistant on MGM's original silent version back in 1925, never sacrifices the human focus of the story in favor of spectacle, and is aided immeasurably by Miklos Rozsa's majestic musical score, arguably the greatest ever written for a Hollywood picture.

 DVD Review - Ben-Hur
You'll also be pleased to know that the film is presented in full anamorphic widescreen on DVD, meaning that you've simply never seen this film looking so good at home before.
While I'm sure there will be some who will skip past the Overture and Entr'Acte, I loved every minute of listening to the film's sweeping score.

Furthermore they argued that the film cut into the profits of the stage production, not because it was strong competition against the stage play but because the film was done so shoddily it cheapened the artistic integrity of Ben-Hur.
Perhaps the memorable “Ride of the Klan” scene convinced him that Ben-Hur& chariot race could be filmed equally well.
Filming was done in both Italy and California, just as the 1925 production.

MGM's Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1925), featuring a cast of 125,000, cost about $4 million to make after shooting began on location in Italy, in 1923, and starred silent screen idols Ramon Novarro and Francis X. Bushman.

 Ben-Hur (1959)
Though the film begins with the wise men paying tribute to baby Jesus in Bethlehem and ends with the Crucifixion, the entire middle focuses on the Roman world and Ben-Hur's quest to find himself and his imprisoned mother and sister.
By patterning his pod race in Star Wars: Episode I after the chariot race from William Wyler's 1959 production of Ben-Hur, George Lucas all but confirmed that the climactic scene has become a part of film lore.
Wyler, who was an assistant on the 1925 film, was a stickler for realism and accuracy, and so even the leper colony scenes were shot in an old marble quarry that actually could have been used for the same purpose in 26 AD.

On-screen through most of the film Charlton Heston's reputation in Hollywood was secured with this performance in which he was stripped to little more than a loin cloth in certain key moments just as he was meant to demonstrate the dual physical and spiritual transformations implicit in the part.
